Hi, I'm new here.

I have a Bosch GSR 9,6-2 cordless screw driver. The last time I've used it was a month or two ago, now the batteries are not charging. I have 2 batteries and both are not charging. The LED indicator on the charger was blinking but no charge for the batteries. I plug them for several hours.

I test the charger with a volt meter and there was no reading.

Can this be fixed? or a replacement is all there is? anyone familiar with the prices?
Thank you.

Re: Bosch GSR 9,6-2 battery not charging.

Bosch has 6 months warranty.
Try to find the Warranty Card that came with the box or proof of purchase and go to the nearest Bosch Service Center.

luma na sir, hindi na under warranty.
I called yung service center, they said hindi narerepair ang charger. replacement lang daw.

Ahhh, Replace nyo nalang siguro..
Try sa malls or other retail shops kung meron sila..
I'm sure it won't be priced higher than 1,500.00..

Brader,

May idea ka na ba sa price from Bosch? Is this AL1411?

I think hindi naman yan 100% "not repairable". If you might have electronics background, you can first explore inside. IMO, it seems your batt mgmtnt IC controller is still working. Our chargers are subject to vibrations. Some solder joints break loose in time. You may look around solder joints first then trace and measure using your VOM.

I have a 7 yr old working AL1411 for my 14.4 ( works as well for your 9.6). Binuksan ko na ito sometime ago due to loose solder joint around the SCR . The circuit is simple and in principle easy to repair, though "not 100% repairable".

If no other faults were found and confirmed to be the controller is faulty, then you might need to stop.

Batt mgmnt IC is a ST special cust selection made for Bosch only. Not for retails sales. Kaya hindi 100% repairable.

My 0.02

Got the exact same problem earlier this year for my GSR 9.6-2, bought in 2008 (5 years old). Both batteries dead and not charging. LED on the AL1411DV charger blinks forever, with battery inserted. Zero volts between all contacts on the charger, with no battery inserted.

Anyone have a working AL1411DV? What are the voltages among the three contacts, with no battery inserted?

Thanks for the suggestion. Will try to open the charger up sometime to check for broken joints.

Five years to failure of a Bosch charger and/or NiCad battery is probably not too bad. But in other news, my Bosch GSR 14,4-2-LI cordless drill also failed at barely 2 years. See report here:

Re: Bosch GSR 9,6-2 battery not charging.

Brader,

You may not be able to measure at the battery charging terminal when no batt inserted. B+ is gated by the presence of the battery. Common safety feature.

I will try to get some test points on the PCB for your reference when I have a free time w/in the week.

Kung malapit ka lang sa Dasma Cavite, I can check it for you.

Re: Bosch GSR 9,6-2 battery not charging.

Took an hour a while ago to get these. I hope this may help. You could ask someone else if you may not be comfortable to do these.

Opened. Note presence of 220V on the transformer taps. Put insulation material on top of the terminals.

Labelled test points.
B+ - positive batt term
B- - negative batt term
T - Batt sensing term and temp sensing( inside battery)
V+ - Unfiltered. Pulsating if you might see on digital VOM. This is where the charging current is being taken.
Vboost - Filtered from rectified B+ line. Supplies the SCR gate drive (Vdrive and VGate) and IC Supply.
Vdrive - This is pulsating. Average value per VOM. Drives the SCR via series diode.
Vgate - scr gate voltage. This is the one mounted on the heatsink.
IC Supply - taken from V+ line. Lowered to 5V

Measured values.

Notes on measured values:
Battery only:
1.0 Batt inserted and resting on the table. PCB on top.
2.0 11.2 is based on my low batt battery. May be diff on yours.

AC only
1.0 Battery removed.
2.0 Plugged into AC outlet.

Batt and AC active.
1.0 B+ measured is based on my charging batt. Increase as the batt charges.
2.0 T shows presence of Batt. Goes down as the batt heats up due to charging.
3.0 Present of V drive is dependent on both V+ and Charging pulse.
4.0 Charging pulse is taken cared by the IC. Pulse is active low.Can only be seen on the oscilloscope.

Based on table value combinations, probable cause could be identified.

Re: Bosch GSR 9,6-2 battery not charging.

Thanks for the detailed test procedure! Finally got around to opening the AL1411DV charger. No obvious loose connections. Was going to measure the points you listed, but at a loss as to where your reference point or "ground" is. Where should one stick the negative/common probe of a multitester?

Also, is this a "standard" charging circuit, nothing special or specific to Bosch? If so, would you have a link to a good schematic or description?

I see what look like 4 diodes connected in bridge rectifier configuration to the output of the transformer (19.7 VAC measured), and the chip on the heatsink I'm guessing is a voltage regulator (?), but that is where my understanding ends of how this circuit works. Is the DC-negative output terminal of the bridge rectifier the reference point (0 V) for taking measurements?

Re: Bosch GSR 9,6-2 battery not charging.

Never mind, figured out what the zero reference was, should have been obvious from the table (B-, which is also the negative output of the bridge rectifier).

Results, with differences in red:

___________ Batt ___ AC ______ AC+Batt
B+ ........... [COLOR="Red"]0
.... 0 ....... [COLOR="Red"]0.08
B- ........... 0 .... 0 ....... 0
T ............ 0 .... 5.05 .... 3.56
V+ ........... 0 ... 16.6 .... 16.5
Vboost ....... 0 ... 24.7 .... 24.7
Vgate ........ [COLOR="Red"]0 .... 0 ....... [COLOR="Red"]0.15
Vdrive .... [COLOR="Red"]-1.4 .... 0.04 .... [COLOR="Red"]0.1
IC supply .... 0 .... 5.06 .... 5.05

Not sure what to make of this -- defective charger, or good charger but failed battery, or defective charger as well as battery?

Re: Bosch GSR 9,6-2 battery not charging.

Good PM Brader.

Looking at the measurements, I might say, the charger itself is faulty.

That V Drive test pt. is the path where the SCR (on the heatsink) is being "pulse" driven to turn on. IC pin connected to Charge Pulse test point is where it originates. Gated and delivered via specific pins of V6 and V7 transistor combination.

Teka. What if the battery is faulty? or totally drained? 0 volt ang batt voltage mo. Usually totally drained lang. May self discharge kasi mga rechargeable batt natin. What I usually do is charge it manually using a DC "constant current" source or a "current limited" DC source for a few minutes, while monitoring the batt terminals.

If you may have a DC power supply. You could use 15 VDC and series 100 ohm (2 - 5 Watts) resistor. Resistor limits max current to 150mA at short circuit condition. Meaning at 0V battery voltage. If accessible ka sa DC power supply with adjustable V and current controls, mas madali. You just have to set the values (eg 15V and 150mA) and do the manual charging.

Again, this is to verify reaction of the battery on the charging current.Battery voltage will build up and its capacity due to charging current overtime.

IIRC by the way, I only had 2 instances of shorted NiCd ( just 1 or 2 out of 10 series cells) on my assigned equipment back then 18 yrs ago.

My Bosch 14.4 batt pack is dated 2006. Still working, but of lesser capacity.

Hope these helps on your isolation process. You could borrow my goods if it could help better. Location points na lang kung manageable.

....................

By the way, I cannot recommend an equivalent as this charging circuit monitors both B+ and temperature inside the batt block via terminal or test point T.

Good Night Brader...
