Re: Chop Saw

@ Rosy

I bought the Makita LC1230 already. Just working on the consumables. The Dewalt looks good too but you know me, if it weren't for production use I would love to import one for my collection. I need brute models and 220v for muscle use unfortunately the service and warranty issues spell downtime for imports. Tnx for the model info. I really appreciate it.

@Jay

I specified that i don't want a 3rd party blade. I hope i won't have to return or trade anything tomorrow. :nerves:

Re: Chop Saw

The LC1230 set me back by 23.7K and the extra blade another 5.4k so I hope Golden has a very good dealer offer 'coz my wallet, in the words of our good friend bigfoot2, has been shot dead.

I ordered the Makita blade. It's very rare to find other Metal blades especially @ 25.4mm arbor unless you have regular access to international sources. I think Makita has 2 Metal cutting Carbide blades in their line. One is for mild steel and a special TCT for much higher grade of cutting. I just don't know what blade will arrive but was assured they are designed for my square and angular frames. Which blade series did your saw come with originally, [COLOR="Red"]B-09765 or [COLOR="Red"]B-09793?

The saw came from Mayon loaded with a Japanese Sugiyama blade. I returned the blade and opted for a Makita [COLOR="Red"]A-87242. It's a very good blade but Freud is better for the 2mm thick square tubes that I usually cut.

I specified that i don't want a 3rd party blade. I hope i won't have to return or trade anything tomorrow.

23.7K for the LC1230 sounds like the December sale pricing of Mayon (23.65K to be exact), right? Was about to get one but deferred when Mayon said that it could not, or was not designed to, cut rebar. I thought that the LC1230 could handle not just channels/pipes/anglebars but also rebar, making an abrasive saw unnecessary, but apparently not. I guess rebar isn't mild steel? Not sure what the problem is -- blade technology? not enough power? both?

Where are these B-09765, B-09793, and A-87242 part numbers coming from? The B- seems to be UK. Are those the blade options available from Mayon? Also, none of these appear to be for other than mild steel, e.g., stainless.

The LC1230 sold in US (same 1" arbor) is specified to come with A-90532. The US manual lists that blade and a few other A- blades as options. For LC1230 sold here, is there no manufacturer spec as to what blade is included? From what you are both saying, it appears to be at Mayon's discretion what blade to include, not manufacturer's decision?

Here's a thought. Still haven't given up hope of avoiding two saws and doing everything with only a cold saw. If the restriction on rebar is due to capability of the default blade as opposed to motor, could a blade for stainless steel like this A-91039 be used to cut rebar instead? At $260 it would be about the cost of a GCO 2400 J, if not less. 💡

BTW, OT, I'm still interested in that UV epoxy/sample... :sunny: :weathermanf2: :weathermanf3:

Re: Chop Saw

It looks like the blade is Mayon's discretion ( I suspect the saw is shipped without blade from their source ). There was a time they run out of Makita blades thus were selling the LC1230 with a Sugiyama blade. This blade looks very good too. I just did not have enough info on it that I had the saw reloaded with a Makita blade.

If I was to have only one metal chop saw then I will choose an abrasive one. It can cut everything I throw at it.

Hi Guad,

The first thing i noticed w/ a cold metal saw is the LOW RPM specification. Next is the emphasis on MILD Steel and Stainless Steel limits of the blade. If you can find an alternate blade other than the OEM blade of the Saw then by all means use it. Just work w/in the blade speed and metal specifications covered by the manufacturer. Rebars, especially the Russian kind are extremely tough
and would most likely be better cut w/ a rebar cutter or a power hacksaw. I guess these saws are meant for a limited amount of abuse. To extend their range of use is sometimes wishful thinking. It would be nice to imagine a metal saw that works like a swiss army knife. Full of surprises.:D Let me arrange a small sample pack for your Epoxy testing. Will text you when to pick up:cheers:

@JayL

My unit came w/ an original 60 Teeth Makita A-series. They don't have the 78 Teeth for Mild and Stainless steel.

Thanks! will await (sample pics sent before ... though precise color not so important).

OK, scratch rebar. Maybe I'm expecting too much from the saw and should scale down... 🙂

Now when is next Mayon promo, or Bosch 1-day sale for that matter...

I have a good offer for the Makita LC1230 but for Chop saw get in touch w/ Golden of Bosch and you can't go wrong. They have good chop saws and excellent service warranty. I got the GCO 2400J yesterday and its now in production use. More beefy than it's competitors but smooth cuts.

Re: Chop Saw

I'm looking to buy a cut off saw for a fencing project to save on time and labor. After the fencing, I won't have use for it (for now), so I'm thinking of just buying a "low-end" brand.

So far the chaepest I've seen are SKIL & VESPA. 4.5k & both are 14".

I know that Skil is carried by Bosch, so service won't be a problem, but I don't have any info on Vespa. I didn't even know they carried other tools aside from compressors. I can't even find it online except for the local ads. Could it be fake?

Re: Chop Saw

Hi there nicomambo,

Bro I don't think the Vespa chop saw you saw is a fake because I've seen them also in a chinese industrial hardware store here in our area, he sells Vespa products, like different horsepower of compressors and chopsaws. I think this provincial hardware store has a main branch somewhere in Binondo, or Evangelista or Sta Cruz.

Sorry bro I did not ask how much their chop saws were but the compressors price were very competitive, very much cheaper than other leading or known hardware or mall stores. Maybe they are also direct importers of this brand from Taiwan, that is why they can sell it a bit cheaper.

I think its the green one, right bro ?, I even saw one being sold sa Sulit for only 4K.

If you know one has better support and is better known and regarded and the other you hardly know...
Good machines almost always find a way into forums like this, well you can always try the vespa. Otherwise i can't find reason whats stopping you from getting one.

Re: Chop Saw

Hi there bro again,

Ok giving you an idea that this Vespa chop saws are not fakes, between the two brands you mentioned, I'd choose the Skil, I'd be more secured with this brand since I know its also manufactures by BOSCH, I know if ever it bogs down on me during the fencing project, it is still covered by a warranty or I have an after sales service group to run to for repairs.

Try to weigh your options here bro, to what brand will give you a good deal and security ! 😉 Anyway like what you said they are both php 4,500. 00.

Re: Chop Saw

In my other thread, I ask about steel trusses for a garage roof DIY project.

Now it got me thinking to buy a chop saw. I can buy one especially if my brothers can chip some money for the materials. Or I can ask wifey for a long overdue birthday gift or xmas gift hehehe

The cheapest I chop saw in the mall is Skil at almost 6K.

Any suggested brand and store? I kept on reading Mayon and Panda which i can probably visit one of these days (I'm from LB, Laguna). As for brands, any known brand will do (at least the ones I know).

Re: Chop Saw

Bro, me again here, hehehe, anyway Panda and Mayon are tool stores supported by the PHM community, you can buy good branded chop saws there. Here are some good brands to consider, BOSCH , MAKITA, or DE WALT. And its counter part or shall we say small brothers which are more for DIYs and are a bit cheaper in price, these are, Skil, Maktec, and Black&Decker .

Aside from the two stores mentioned, see if you can visit DIY SHOPS and do check their chopsaws or you can get in touch with Miss Mimi G of Industrialsupply143, they sell original VESPA chopsaws at a very reasonable price at 4K since they are the importers of this brand, also gives warranties for their units. This seller is another one supported by the PHM community. Just say you are a PHM member and you might get a discount.

Here is their contact nos.
Tel nos. 377-9434

GOOD LUCK on your hunt !!!!!!!! 😉

Re: Chop Saw

Thanks Rosy.

I am willing to settle for the "small brothers" if there is a significant price difference and since I will be using it occasionally only.

Any tips on what to look for in chop saws? Size, RPM, etc?
