A dedicated thread on how we conduct preventive maintenance and repair on our tools.

Let me start this thread with my Skill variable speed Jigsaw.

Problem : Auto-scroll knob is moving - lock malfunction

Root cause: molten plastic part on the knob due to heat generated by metal to metal friction

Solution: Removed the molten plastic & replaced it with epoxy to hold the metal plate. Lubricated the metal plate on the knob using high temp synthetic grease.

After 24 hrs curing of epoxy. I tested the Jigsaw and it's doing good again.

Re: DIY - Tools Maintenance & Repair

My grinder's power cord took a hit from the grinding disc during last night's wip session ...

Re: DIY - Tools Maintenance & Repair

Well my contribution to this thread is just a simple clean up maintenance of my LOTUS 4 1/2" angle grinder. Bought it in 2006 and still running great all these years, nothing serious, just clean up and removal of dust rust that have accumulated around and under the gear head.

Did this clean up a few days before Christmas after doing some heavy grinding on a certain WIP.

Prepared every thing, then removed the grinding wheel and guard and started tinkering under the gear head scraping the rusted metal dust, I think !!!

With these two pics above, one can see the dirt or metal dust on the underside cover of the gear and even at the small fan attached inside.

Then removed the underside covering to expose its innards and the gear, continued scraping the surroundings of dirts, well looking at the gear chamber, the lubricant or marfak grease are still intack and clean.

Ok there is the gear all cleaned up, just added more grease before the install

Another image of the open gear chamber, all cleaned up around the lid, made sure there where no contamination of dust particles on the grease

Re: DIY - Tools Maintenance & Repair

In this image, four more bolts or stud will have to be removed so that I can clean also the impeller and the armature.

Well I was able to loosen the four bolts/stud but cannot disengaged the gear head from the body so I did not pursue any more and its getting very late already, its almost 3:30 AM, and decided to continue the clean up maintenance some other day.

thanks for viewing. !!!!!

it now runs cooler, quieter and less sparks,
here's an old advertisement from 1957 for nostalgia
