Greetings,
What can you say about this table saw? I saw one at SOS. Mura na po ba sa Php 3,500.00? May nakagamit na po ba nito sa inyo? Mas ok po ba ang table saw kaysa hand held?

http://www.gmcworldwide.com.au/index.cfm?module=products&pid=98

Salamat po

Re: GMC Table Saw

Welcome Anluwagi. That price is not bad considering that those available at my nearby industrial supply store sells similar units at P6,500 last I asked.

These table saws use a universal motor very similar to what are used for handheld units. In fact you could make a table saw simply by mounting a handheld below a table. You won't get the extra features like a slot for the a miter fence or a quick lock fence but these can also be quite easily built into a homemade table saw.

I have a table saw at home and I use it more often than I use my portables mainly because my workpieces easier to handle with the saw fixed. Of course when the workpieces are big such as a whole sheet of plywood, a handheld is what is called for. In summary, a portable is more versatile and also less expensive.

GMC for me is an OK brand. We used to sell GMC tools and although we've stopped I've kept quite a of them in my workshop and I use them often enough. I also have some other brands of tool and some difference is noticeable I admit however for me the value-for-money offered by GMC tools is hard to beat if you are a non-professional woodworker.

Re: GMC Table Saw

Hi again. My earlier comment was made without opening the link you included. Here is the picture of the table saw you are asking about.

This saw is uses an AC motor and is not very powerful. It also has a 7-1/4 blade capacity and a non-standard blade elevation and angle adjustment approach. I know this well because I have one of those ... well I think I do ... we never sold it as far as I remember. I kept it because I think it would be good for small workpieces.

Unfortunately, for P3,500, I have to say it is a bit expensive and I'd not buy it at that price myself. You be better off buying a 10" portable and mounting it underneath a piece of 3/4" plywood. The P6,500 saws I mentioned earlier are much better than these particular GMC saw feature- and capacity- wise.

Re: GMC Table Saw

Thanks to your reply. I think I'll buy a portable and mount it on a table, like you said.

Thanks again.

Re: GMC Table Saw

Hi,

Nakagamit na rin po ako nung ganung table saw. Fitted with a diamond blade it also is sold as tile cutter. Nakagawa ako ng isang display cabinet it was quite difficult because of the size of the table compared to the full size of a 19mm Block Board. Incc63 is right in saying that full sheet is better dealt with a handheld. Using a handheld there are several ways to hold the board while cutting. You can lay it on two tables and cut between the gap, lay it on a hard insulation board (the blue colored stuff or even styro) or make the lower support of your saw horse a little longer to extend beyond one side of the legs and place them side by side. You now put the board on these protrusions leaning on the saw horse para di nakalapag sa floor. Because of the orientation nakaslant all areas of the board is accessible plus you also have the benefit of space saving. You can do rip as well as cross cut using a guide featured in this site. You can also make yourself a vertical panel saw as what I did.

Cheers,

Re: GMC Table Saw

If will not be using your saw commercially, I would recommend one of the 2nd tier brands. There are quite a few, GMC is one of them. Of course if you have the money to spare, first tier brands such as Makita or DeWalt are fine. I myself am a hobby user so most of my tools are 2nd tier: GMC and Ryobi.

A 10" saw of course has more capacity than a 7-1/4" saw but aside from being more expensive, a large saw is more difficult to handle. For general purpose, I would say a 7-1/4" is fine. However if you really intend to use it only with a table then get the 10".

If you want a 10", I have several unused GMC 10" saws that are for sale.

Hi,

This is my vertical panel saw with 10" contractor saw. The vertical is made with Aluminum frame and rail with MDF backing strips.

Re: GMC Table Saw

Nice. I suppose there is counterweight? Can it cut horizontally?

I see you are GMC fan too.

Re: GMC Table Saw

Yup, it can cut horizontally, recently I modified it so I can easily remove the saw and set it horizontally. You just have to push the board through and the saw is stationary.

Both is GMC, they seem to have a satisfactory line of power tools. I even have a GMC electric grass cutter.

I modified the table saw so I can use the plywood sled for crosscut. They are quite a combination as a computer table and pullout larder took me just a few minutes to cut the boards.

Next on my wish list is a dust extractor and a planer/thicknesser.

Cheers,

Re: GMC Table Saw

2diy4: You can see the saws tomorrow.

22y:

I know how you feel about the thickness planer. I waited several years and even almost bought a Makita for P33k. Luckily I waited and now have a Ryobi that cost a lot lot less. Actually, I have 4 of them. Tell if you be interested in one.

For dust extraction, I just use a shop vac.

Incc,

How much are you selling your Thicknesser?
Is it a combination over/under(Jointer/Thicknesser)?
