Re: HELP: Power Tools advice

Re: HELP: Power Tools advice

Hi there xgol,

Firstly, welcome to PHM but could you kindly introduce yourself to the forum, if you will scroll down the index page, just right below the GAZEBO Forum, we have the Member Introductions , please give us some info of yourself, your hobbies or interest, where are you from, your line of work etc though nothing too personal. We just want to know you better as a new member of this forum. THANKS !

Secondly, to answer your question, if you have a rough and an un-even wood surface, use a hand or electric planer or yes a belt sander and for your finishing, a random orbital sander then a sheet sander using 120 up to 180 grit to get that smooth glass like finish. If you are on a very tight budget as a noob, search ka sa sulit for Ryobi or Ozito, lots of them there that are available but if you can stretch your budget more, get a Black&Decker, AEG, DeWALT or Bosch.

Oh, first time to hear a router being used as a sander, kinda odd bro ! hehehe, patay kang bata ka !!! 😮

GOOD LUCK and CHEERS !!! 😉

Re: HELP: Power Tools advice

I bought circular pad (and velcro sandpaper 60 and 120) for my router. Not very happy with the results esp with the uneven surface. Or kelangan ko lang practice pa? salamat.

A sales-creature ADVISED you that you could use your router as a disc sander?
:shocked2:

Re: HELP: Power Tools advice

ooops... sorry, mea culpa: my mind whispered "grinder" but my fingers typed "router". patay talaga mga kuko ko dyan sa router-sander combo.

I've read that belt is for big and aggressive sanding jobs. i need one of those orbital random sanders (medium/light duties).

salamat sa Welcome. Will do as advised (intro).

Good to hear that those Aussie surplus brands are worth looking at. Cheaper indeed but I hope serviceable naman kapag may nasira later. Will keep on shopping for something that meets my immediate needs.

Re: HELP: Power Tools advice

Well bro that is the problem with surplus power tools, they only carry personal warranty from the sellers, no factory warranty for defects or malfunctions and parts. Better to purchase tools that are available locally and that carry warranty from their factory. For sure they will have tool parts, accessories and service centers in metro Manila.

For better quality than theses surplus, you can start with these hobbyist brand, SKIL or B&D, these are the small brothers of BOSCH and DeWALT. 😉

Have fun DIYing !!! 😀

[COLOR="Green"]OH, you can get your SKIL,BOSCH and DeWALT products from KIMGOLD INDUSTRIAL MARKETING, they always have promos there for PHM members, just send a PM to Coolmaxheric, also a PHM members for promo updates !!

Re: HELP: Power Tools advice

On the grinder-sander combo:

I do the same occasionally when I need to sand aggressively non-flat surfaces. I attach a flapdisk (I think that's what it's called) which is a disk with some strips of sandpaper attached in a fan-out fashion. For example, I used a flapdisk in sanding the rough endges of this curved hull:

For aggressive sanding of flat surfaces, a cheap belt sander would do. I have an Ozito and ever had problems with it. Just be careful with belt sanders. If you loose control of it, it catapults faster than any toy car you've ever played with.

For finishing, I use random orbital sanders. The "random" motion avoids leaving grit marks on your work.

For many purposes, you can get by with up to 180 grit. In fine work I do (e.g. table surface, humidor), I go up to 400 grit.

Re: HELP: Power Tools advice

wow, a Chris-Craft?

Thanks all for the useful inputs! Was at SM North and SM Fairview ACE and they don't have Random Orbit and fine blades for jigsaw. I thought these are big names on h/w
