Hello PHM members.

Bought a bosch mitresaw a few months back. Now i'm looking to finally deal with my biggest frustration = irregular, bent, curved, (etc) stocks of wood. I called Mayon up and the price of their Makita 2012NB is a little steep. Maybe if i'd act selfish and crazy i'd buy it cause they have a 45% discount on it when i called.

But are there other options or brands aside from Makita's 2012NB?
Something around the PhP 18 to 20K price range

Or at Php33K for the makita, will the quality and durability be worth the extra 10 to 14K of my real working budget?

My yakal board at home is 10inches wide. and i wont touch it unless i get a thicknesser or get a referral to a shop that offers thicknessing as a service. (my last project bombed cause of terrible planing haha)

Thanks in Advance sirs. Any advice or help on this would be great.

Re: i need thicknesser advice sirs

the thicknesser cannot address the bent or curved wood bro. What you can achieve is even thickness. It is the jointer that will remove the bend but the final thickness that can be achieved depends on how severe the bent is. you can flatten/straighten one face using a jointer then use the thicknesser to plane the opposite face to even out the thickness. Im one of the many satisfied owners of makita 2012NB thicnesser. There are some guys here who are using other thicknessers like ryobi. You can get one at around 1/3 of makita thicknesser price. BTW if you can stretch your budget a little bit you can buy a bnew makita 2012NB thicknesser for 28k. I've seen one in sulit. HTH

How much thicknessing work do you foresee in the future? Do you see yourself working on continuous projects with this equipment? If it is just occasional use then i would rather have it contracted by a pro shop, at least just the thicknessing part and/or buy a portable planer for starters. Another good investment is a table jointer w/c has more use and is a must for material preparation. If you can afford the Makita then go for it. There are good reviews on this site about it. If you are budgeted there are Chaiwanese models but no clue as to their performance. I have surplus units like the RYOBI portable thickness planer and they work just as fine as the Makita. Just remember to check the integrity of the working parts before you buy them. Good Luck!

Re: i need thicknesser advice sirs

Thnaks for the advice guys.

I did some research. My woods problem is that it is cupped. This is fixed by a thicknesser right? or is sir camv's advice on a jointer the one to follow.

Sir Willy, yes i believe ill be using thicknesser often (if im not mistaken for its primary job hehe) Im terrible with the electric planer i bought a dewalt a year ago. I'm sure with practice i could get better at electric hand planing but I'm rushing to make something out of this yakal for someone.

How much do table jointers cost? Its for what carpenters call "laminating" right? so that the stocks of wood butt up perfectly against each other side by side when laid out flat like for tabletops???

If it is cupped I suggest you make gentle passes on the thicknesser fisrt with the convex side up. when half the width is already flattened flip it over and do the same on the concave side. then flip it more often in the next couple of gentle passes until both faces flattens.
Jointer and thicknesser performs different tasks, the former makes the wood flat & straight while the latter even out the thickness. It will be easier to square your project or lessen the gap on the glue joint during wood lamination. I would say both are a"must have" if you're a serious woodworker and you have enough space in your shop to accomodate the jointer.
A 6" table jointer costs around 20k (torque brand is locally available) while the wider ones (12" & above) costs a fortune because most are for industrial use already.

Re: i need thicknesser advice sirs

Hi,
Just thought I'd add my two cents. I'm a Canadian, had a 10 inch Ryobi planner for many yrs, did a good job but just not wide enough and sharpening blades was not as easy as i wished. bought a Dewalt 12 inch that I have here now. Changing blades is very easy as is adjusting. I'm not familiar with the Makita planer, but if it's a real Makita it should be quality. I own many Makita tools and love them. Myself, I would do anything to avoid buying any chinese tools. Quality is always worth it and I can't afford to waste my money on copies. A jointer is for edge work. A table saw can straighten the edge and the jointer dresses it smooth. The thickness planer is almost indispensable even in Canada because of variances in thickness doing cabinets and mating work. Good tools are always a source of pride. Best wishes and Merry Christmas.

Re: i need thicknesser advice sirs

Thanks sirs joe and camv.

Thank you for the input.

I think i'm sold on needing a thicknesser. But the question is, should i search more. My call to mayon has the makita 2012nb at 59k with a 45% discount the guy said. Thats P32,450 right?

Do you think this is the best price i could get for this model? I saw some posts mentioning that the stores along edsa near victory cubao have good finds too, but i couldnt find time yet to visit.

I might try shopping around between christmas and new year but if i cant find anything that could beat mayon's offer (either a lower priced makita or a totaly different brand and model with a 18 to 20k price tag) I might get the mayon makita thicknesser siguro.

What do you guys think?

Thanks everyone. Happy holidays.

Re: i need thicknesser advice sirs

dont buy from mayon..go the the store opposite it..look for heidi..they sell the tool much les than makita offers..bakit? mayon wont compete for their dealers price!

isang tawag lang ni heidi sa mayon, mabilis pa sa alas kwatro, kukuha na sila ng stock sa kabila (mayon) hehe

i am very satisfied with my 2012NB thickness planer...if you will be making cabinetries in the future, get one now!
