Since i acquired the vise on absolute impulse no prior planning was made

1.) initial preparation: adding thickness and compressive density (i dont think i used the right terms but oh well you guys get it) to the 2 layered 3/4" marine ply counter top

i used four 2x4" lumber glued to the underside. I didnt use any screws since i didnt want any obstruction once its time for me to attach the bolts. The 2x4" didnt sit flush to the edge of the counter top so i had to HAND SAW!! the protruding part off..... it was a grueling 15 minutes

the side of the counter top is now flush

2.) installing the vise while maintaining the "flushness"

I plan to add the length of the counter top via increments of 1x1" since the thickness of the "base clamp" is just as thick as the 1x1" wood

3.) mounting the Vise

(to be continued) 🙂

Re: installing irwin record vise 52 1/2 on a thin counter top

the following photos should speak for themselves:

bolting method: i did not use bolts (tinamad ako) i used 3.5" tekscrews with washers. The washers were vital since the hole where the bolt is supposed to rest on is quite big.

The tekscrews were more than adequate since i can lift the table while it is upside down using only the vise as the lifting point.

cut a hole on the side so let the rail/auger/ or whatever its called to go through. The hole was NOT done with finesse.

lined up some marking for dog holes

started adding 1x1" to make it flush. Will add another set of 1x4" all the way covering the vise pad as well.

(to be continued again)

by the way i took out the recessed end of my table. The one i used to place misc tools and items. Since i find that i needed more table space. Hence the joined different coloiur plywood at the upper part of the counter top

That Irwin is a good WW vise. I'm sure it will serve you well.

Here's a pic of my Record 53 Vise. I'm very happy with it except that there are times when I wished it had Quick Release Mechanism.

Millermatic 180 Autoset Mig Welder
Miller Spoolmate 100 Spool Gun

thanks for the detailed info.

I know you need other info on installing your vise Jun so hope this helps.
clamp your apron piece in the vise and mark the portion where it will be covered. (sorry no pic) do not cut the apron first and make sure you have extra length on both ends.
you would want the top of the vise to be slightly lower than the top so it will be covered by the apron.

I made a spacer block so I can lower it to my desired depth

then mark the depth of the top part of the vise on the apron before cutting the recess.
now mock up the apron by clamping it with the vise and mark your end and joint lines. Cut and install the apron and use the vise as the main clamp, use a long caul and clamp the other portions to provide a good glue joint.

the side aprons had room for the top to move and is the tail side of the joint which allowed me easier installation (meaning I installed the side aprons last)...

kung medyo malabo, hanapin mo na lang wb build wip ko (hehehehe) or better yet, pasyalan mo na lang ako. btw, the second picture also showed the lag bolts that I used (stainless opcorz....)

Re: installing irwin record vise 52 1/2 on a thin counter top

using a large face material is nice but I suggest you limit yourself to 3" longer on each side only. a long one will have the tendency to move a lot and sway your vise sideways (if that makes sense)...

if you do not have a larger wood piece, you can always glue some pieces together and make it look good and massive.

the advantage of having one face of the vise under the apron will be apparent when you have long pieces you want to handplane later on....

I got it timb, spacers are ready also. The vise is 1/2" lower than table top, is this enough?

make it at least 3/4" lower than the top, remember you still need to flatten it once everything is in place....
