Bros ,

I'm trying to find a good deal on a 6" or 8" jointer either available locally or in the US market.

Anybody has a good suggestion on this. I saw some John Benzen in Wilcon Depot but am not sure if these are ok. I have just started researching about this woodworking tool and my info are but minimal for now.

Any input or help will be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Jay

Re: Jointer advise

Solid construction is important if you want to work on large and/or heavy pieces. I have a Delta JT160 but I don't think it will do high quality work on a 8' 2x4. For light short pieces like the scrap pine wood I normally use, it is great. It is light enough to be moved around which is important if space is a premium. The best thing is it is affordable ... about P9k in the U.S. - great for me because anything over P10k would require approval from a "higher authority".

The closed down furniture factory I bought my "ancient" drill press from was also selling their jointer, which I was also interested in at the time. I did not buy it only because it was much too big for the work I do, or for my shop for that matter. Never mind that it was actually a fabricated cutter head with a 6-foot hardwood log for its body ... think wood plane scaled up 20 or so times. The fence was a piece of C-section steel.

If you don't really need a variable angle fence, meaning you only want to square wood, get one with a fixed fence that is fine tuned with shims.

Re: Jointer advise

By the way, a table saw with a good blade and solid fence can also do good jointing work. More often than not, I actually do this.

yes, maybe something like this?

or maybe a router table like this could be used for jointing thin stocks up to 2.5 inches. like this...

as for me, I have found a sash maker near me that would handle my boards for a small amount. say a 6" x 5' x 3/4" would cost me about Php20.00 per board to be jointed... saves me the space (which I don't have) and the need to invest on another tool. someday maybe but not for now. saving up to buy a Bosch TS as well...

Re: Jointer advise

My main concern now is how to square up stock on four sides. Jointer for the first and second side. Thickness planer for the third and lastly the table saw for the fourth side. It is imperative that I have uniform sized wood for the work I plan to do.

I was looking at this Jet tool. It is priced competitively but I just don't know how it will perform plus how long it will last.

Incc63 - Bro can you please give more feedback on your Delta. I really don't need to plane stock more than 6 feet long. This looks attractive and I can pair it up with a separate Thickness Planer. TIA

Re: Jointer advise

Actually, as much as I'd like to give you more advise, I've not used it that extensively so my insights are still not very deep. It seems ok for the stuff I do but like I said I usually can get away with using the table saw.

I can do better though: I need to make the sheer clamps for my 18' sailboat. Sheer clamps are just long piece of wood that support the edge of a boat's sides. I'll probably buy a 2"x8"x20' of sun dried tangile though I'm thinking of using Yakal. You can have the honors of ripping, jointing and thicknessing the board :). I'm kidding about the work of course, though you would be welcome. Anyway, just come to my house and I'll let you play with the jointer as much as you like so you can assess it.

Timber posted a picture of a router table with a long straight bit ... I've done that too but not many times since that requires even more work in my case than using the jointer.

Re: Jointer advise

Jay, the first side can be jointed with a no.7 Jointer plane... that how I do it. then the second on the RT, a thicknesser would be better to get in my opinion as this is the 3rd step, then you can finish off at the RT or TS for the last side. Will teach you a trick on the RT that works great for me to get stocks parallel on the opposing side. but this all depends on the material you want to square of course. 🙂

Re: Jointer advise

Incc63 - Thank you very much for your offer to see the Delta Jointer in person. If I decide to go this route then it would really be a big help in the decision process.

Timber - Would the technique work out with wide boards? Thanks

If I am not mistaken they wanted something like 16K plus. That thing looks really heavy.

And pricey, too. But it's a good 4k cheaper than the Torq brand I've seen from toolsfromus. Thanks anyway. I'll check it out next time I'm going to Manila.
