Don't know if this has been asked before. If i buy a power tool, lets say a router with 6mm bit holder. will i be having a difficult time looking for router bits sa atin? mostly kasi nakikita ko sa sulit mga english system yung gamit sa mga sizes. TIA

Re: metric on english

Router colllets have varying sizes depending on the manufacturer and the country of w/c it was intended for. The Collet holder however usually come out universal per manufacturer with just the bit hole varying. I have a 3/8 inch router collet that hardly gets used because of the rareness of this bit size. Just stick with what is customarily used to avoid problems like this or you can always order online if you prefer having one. Most routers have dual collets except for trimmers w//c are usually dedicated for 1/4 inch bits.

Re: metric on english

Oh. ok po and thanks for the info. Sensya na po fot this newbie question. So yung tool holder that they are saying yun din po ba ang collet? or the tool holder will hold the collet? I was thinking of getting the bosch POF1200AE[COLOR="Blue"] http://www.bosch-do-it.com/gb/en/diy/tools/pof-1200-ae-3165140451659-199905.jsp . The store told me it also comes w/ 6mm-8mm tool holder. I'm in Netherlands by the way kaya gaun yung size nila. and this would be my 1st router.
If the 3/8" collet is rare, ano po yung common size?

Re: metric on english

^ In PH, common is 1/4 and 1/2 inch. 1/2 inch routers may come with fittings for smaller sizes, usually 1/4, maybe 3/8.

One 1/2 inch router that I have says "12 mm 1/2 inch" in its spec. If this is not just a sloppy spec but an indication that the router is designed to safely hold 12 mm bits in addition to 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) bits, I wonder whether a 6 mm router in EU might be able to hold 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) bits ... or vice versa.

If you are dead set on getting a 6-8 mm router in EU (why?), might be a good idea to get 8 mm bits there as well. I recently had to do just this, as it looks like 8 mm bits are not available locally. For flexibility, I also got 1/2 inch to 8 mm adapters to be able to use the bits in 1/2 inch routers.

Yes, the terminology is all over the place -- collet, holder, sleeve, adapter, reducer, bushing, and all imaginable combinations, e.g., collet sleeve, collet adapter, bushing adapter, etc.
