How useful is a drill press? (not sure i this is the correct term)

I saw a gadget worth a little over 1K which can convert an ordinary drill into a drill press. You just attached the drill into that gadget.

Another gadget does the same for angle grinders. Instant cutters.

Re: Ordinary drill into a drill press

I use mine occasionally and I find it useful one way or another since I just happen to have a spare drill which is permanently installed in the jig. However if I had only one drill then I wont even consider it. I feel it is much faster to drill holes without it. It is also not that accurate.

I have no experience with the angle grinder jig but would like to see it. Where can I find this?

tks

Re: Ordinary drill into a drill press

I got this a very long time ago. Price if I recall correctly is like 1,300 pesos. Not a bad kit if you want to drill multiple holes.

Where did you find the angle grinder kit? I could use a mini chop saw setup.

Re: Ordinary drill into a drill press

i saw it here in Laguna (LB) in one of the small variety shop. we have handyman and a big builders depot here but haven't seen them carry such tool.

the variety shop actually is known for selling some hard to find tools mostly imported.

i'll try to take a picture to give you an idea. i think the one of the cons is that it only fits small angle grinders.

Re: Ordinary drill into a drill press

I got the same one. It's brand's Krisbow. Bought it from ACE Hardware in Indonesia. I saw a generic one in Singapore too. If you do end up buying the Krisbow, make sure you buy the vise as well. Had to go to the 2 ACE stores in Batam, Indonesia to get it. I think I saw one in RS electronics or Farnell too... or was it Dremel.

It is nothing compared to a true bench drill. But if you're aiming at perpendicular and controlled depth (though as previously stated, not that accurate), this helps alot. The only problem I have with this drill stand is its "reach", e.g. if yoúr panel's too wide and your hole's supposed to be in the middle it could pose a challenge.

Another problem is if you have a single speed or if your drill's speed is controlled via the trigger, you'd have to use both hands for the lever arm and the drill trigger, as compared to a bench drill. But if you've got a drill with variable speed, you only need to lock your trigger and then you can use one hand for the lever and the other for holding your workpiece.

TIP: you might want to bring your drill along if you're shopping for this (or atleast know the diameter of that area just behind the chuck) as based on experience, it looks like it was designed for drills from the same brand (as far as my krisbow stand is concerned). My BnD drills kinda bigger than it's designed for.

You might want to try this out if your drill could fit in it:

Say, anybody got a photo of that angle grinder jig? TIA.

I was able to find the picture of the drill stand I saw in one of stores near our place. Same brand (tork craft). Fortunately, their on line brochure also have a picture of the angle grinder stand. The ones I saw is not the same brand but is similar to what is in the photo.

I am more interested in the angle grinder stand because it really takes a lot of time and effort cutting those angles bars and other metal stuffs using an ordinary hacksaw.

Re: Ordinary drill into a drill press

These devices are quite common o/s. However don't expect too much of them - OK for lioght drilling etc, but remember they are not very convenient (as outlined above) and can't take heavy work with any accuracy. The Dremel version is really for very small, light stuff. If you NEED such a device then best invest in a bench drill - more expense, but they will drill all day, accurately and with power. Same with the angle grinder adaptor - a drop/chop saw will do a much better job, but at a higher cost.

A person could make a real business of importing these things!!!

Re: Ordinary drill into a drill press

My drill press only cost P3500 when I bought it maybe 5 years ago. It is of course only 2nd hand which was originally used in a furniture factory that closed down. The most important thing when buying a drill press second hand is to see if the spindle has any play - it should not.

Actually greentreephrog1, there are a lot of people importing them. I'd like to see a local making them.

Collar sizes are too different: 43mm on a drill stand, and about 18mm on a dremel.
