There are sooo many type of drills. The noisy but workhorse "impact", the concrete busting "hammer", and the regular drill (varying ranges of RPM-torque because of internal gearing.) I got a bit overwhelmed with the choices when i looked it up.
The mayon (philippine makita distributor) site and the makita new zealand (lots more description) site helped me out a bit. And thanks to one bored clerk in t. Alonzo who's glad to show off his expertise in the makita range.
Basically, in the chinese makita (3.5K pesos) class the HP1630 is the one. (It's predecessor, the 1620 is the one we use at work- it's good and does last but the chinese chuck's a weak point.) At double the price, made-in-japan class, it's the NHP1300s.

I settled on the NHP1300s. Genuinely japanese, can switch from a hammer to a drill mode, got a reasonable rpm range, an rpm limiter on the trigger and even a reverse. The 13mm chuck is FAR from cheesy.
...The tool's plastic body is rather different. I was trying to remember for days now what top-shelf item had that same funky plastic- staedtler techpens. In college i was using dark brown, good looking Rotrings, and i can't figure out what's so hype about those coarse-looking staedtler mars matics :p.

One flaw though, when i bought mine it had about 1/5" of a teaspoon of leaked oil. I thought it came from the chuck but turns out it's from the gearbox. Guess my unit was old-stock enough that the oil separated from the grease (or maybe the gasket application was also imperfect.)
Studied the exploded diagram in the manual to reduce surprises. Use an earbud to clean off the separated oil. Add gasket. (Be mindful of the brushes! Pinched wires, leaf springs...) Close it up.
Pic of gasket i used and pieces of the old gasket. I removed the squeeze out after it solidified a bit.
Oh, the case is plastic. Sir JayL, your NHP1300s's case is metal?

Yes my drill case is metal. Hmmm maybe mine could use some new grease too ... when time permits I'll check it as well.

When i first tested it at the store I frowned because it felt chunky. Naka hammer mode pala, turned the switch to "drill" and it whirred smoothly :D.
Well hopefully, the additional cost translates to additional years in service too. It hurts a bit to shell out the moolah, but the vibe of ruggedness and precision, the chinese makita never had it.

...I wonder if the motor gets enough air to cool it at around 60-80% of top speed. Sparks in the brushes are minimal to zero in that speed compared to when in full gallop. ...If i'm gonna used it to buff my car, i'll be in the 1500-2000rpm range. Guess i'll have to observe if the air blowing out is on the warm side.

I'm slowly phasing out the Black and Decker 9V and VersaPak NiCad cordless in favor of Lithium Ion.
The bottom one is a 7.2V Nicad Cordless Makita 3/8" drill driver on it's second battery pack. I'll keep this one as it performs better than the newer Li Ion models. Made in Japan. If the battery dies I'll buy a replacement again. The red screwdrivers are Milwaukees mostly used during my long ago PC craze days ...

For medium to light duty work I guess these will be ok.
However I decided a different route for the bigger guns and would be going all out for Metabos. 18 Volt Li Ions. Will update again when I receive these. I really don't rush purchasing so more often than not I get killer deals. The Bosch duo I got for around $125.

How long have you had your NHP? With the caution sticker in the handle (it's on the center on mine) and metal case, our drills must be of differing decade of manufacture.

...been using a hilti te6 for some time. its been with me for 6 years but i was itching to try the anti-vibration technology on these tools. hilti has a good reputation with their tools and so are the prices of their babies, cant afford at the moment so what catch my eyes was a blue tool- bosch... last week i got a good reason to have one at last. bought it here in hk around 11.5T ,came with a carrying case, grease for tool bit, auxilliary handle, depth stop...
...found some good use for the carrying case as well
...my good old hilti was 650w , 3.1kg, impact energy of 1.8j. the bosch is 230V 50-60hz, 800watts, sds-plus, 3.5kg, impact energy of 3.5j. a little bit heavier, stronger motor but the 10% less vibration really help ease some of tension on my old joints when using it upright or overhead. it has higher drilling rate and chiselling for my light to moderate applications than my old hilti. hilti's are proven tough in the field, the bosch? well, only time can tell...but so loving the blue color of bosch...hehehe...

...on the left in a shelf is my not so old timer hilti, no grudge with him really, just wanted to try the blue newbies. hehehe ...before i retired my hilti back home, im tackling small retiling works like these ...
...fast jobs, and needed to be finished in an overnight sched. havent tested the bosch yet in situations like these, only drilling holes for now. but i think it will do fine, less the vibration (i hope).
...still praying for more partime jobs to buy more blue tools...:D

...i hate repairs, like this one. but they do pay for the food and tools.:D the first photo is a 13year old fast food kitchen flooring. local chinese manpower did the job but because its old, most of the grouting are not there anymore. leaking drain pipes, exposure to frequent hot and cold washing puts a lot of strain on these tiles. water and moisture are trapped underneath these tiles which weakens it in a lot of areas. the owner wont close the kitchen for one day for repairs for financial reasons. so the chiselling of old broken tiles, retiling, getting some kitchen equipment on and off the affected area, clean up, can only be done from 12mn - 5am... its a nightmare! but somebody's got to do it. 😮
...the second picture was a leak puzzle, long story really... its a frustrating, yet a funny experience for me. thanks to rotary hammers, what could be an endless chiseling were cut short to a 2 day job.:D
