Ryobi Planer Thicknesser Feed?

Been feeding a lot of rough cuts to my Ryobi Planer/Thicknesser. Today, the feed just doesn't work anymore. When I insert a piece of wood, the planer doesn't grab it nor push it through the blades. The blades are still spinning. The wood just doesn't go in anymore.

Has this happened to anyone before?

I assume a belt snapped inside somewhere. Or does the Ryobi use gears? I'd probably open up the thing tomorow to find out. Just wanted some advice in case anyone here had the same experience before.

Re: Ryobi Planer Thicknesser Feed?

there is a chain on one side of that machine. i believe on the left side if your facing front. its like chains ng bike. if you know how to connect chains ng bike then you will have no problem, fortunately for me i learned this things during my BMX days

Re: Ryobi Planer Thicknesser Feed?

I think I do. I used to have a racer bike some centuries ago and was pretty handy with it.

Is it the one on the lft of this photo?

This one?

Thanks!

Ding, read this [COLOR="Blue"]BLOG. It details the interior of the thicknesser.

Just bear with my english.:):):)..

ernie_serrano maybe right, the chain could be failing na.

Hanep! You are one brave soul for cannibalizing a fully functioning thicknesser!

Will open up mine tomorrow evening (or day after if I run out of daylight). Now, if I find something broken, would you have some trash parts from your thicknesser that I can get off your hands?:thanks:

Re: Ryobi Planer Thicknesser Feed?

No problem...basta yung in-feed roller and original belt is in Tarlac na, one fellow PHM begged for these parts.

I hope its just the chain or one of the spring for the feed roller is failing.

Re: Ryobi Planer Thicknesser Feed?

Please, keep your parts for me. I'll get the whole lot if you don't need them. My thicknesser has a number of things that are broken already. The rollers at the top, for example have fallen off. Your parts would be great spares for me.

In return, I have a bandsaw you can use!

@ernie
Let me check this weekend kung madali lang tanggalin yung gears, medyo natambakan na yung box. I know a machine shop that can duplicate your gears...i think the name of the company is Champion Fine Tooling in Valenzuela, try google. Or let me check our company's vendor for this type of parts (madami kaming plastic gears pinapagawa sa mga machine shop for our large digital printers)

Re: Ryobi Planer Thicknesser Feed?

Couldn't sleep well knowing I have a broken thicknesser. Got up before 4am and tinkered with it. This is how things looked:

The upper chain broke (Lower right hand of photo). Luckily, all the parts seem to be there: the links and the pins that came off. It was thoughtful of Ryobi to encase the chain assembly in plastic for just these unfortunate occasions. Surprisingly, too, the thing's well made for a cheapo. Never had problems with it til now, except for the occasional skipping when raising and lowering (as Ernie mentioned).

I think I can manage to reconnect. Will have to do it tonight. I would still like to get your loot just in case.

Now, the thing looks really grimy. Lots of wood dust. Might as well clean the innards while I'm at it.

What's the proper way to do it? Would toothbrush and a tabo of kerosene do? (I saw some motorcycle repairmen do this when I was a kid) WD-40? After cleaning, do I put grease on the sprockets and chains?

I'll probably open the blade housing and see if I can clean that, too. Any suggestions doing this?

I seem to recall someone told me the blades can be reversed to get a new sharp edge. Is this true?

Re: Ryobi Planer Thicknesser Feed?

Sorry, pls ignore my question re how to clean. Did what I should have done in the first place: read the manual. It says:

The recommended lubrication for roller chains used in medium to low operation is to simply wipe the chain clean. When there is an excess build up of dust or wood shavings etc., coat chain with a light film of oil but never pour the oil directly on the chain. Over -oiling tends to hasten the collection of dust and woodshavings and works them into members of the chain leading to increased wear and premature replacement. This applies to the speed reduction and height adjustment chains as well as the elevation screws.

Re: Ryobi Planer Thicknesser Feed?

Fixed my thicknesser, guys. The chain was an easy fix. Just made a bit difficult because I have fat fingers fumbling with small parts. Didn't replace/reverse the blades since they all seemed sharp still. Got to clean the insides, too. Here's an advice to thicknesser owners: clean the insides whenever you have some free time. Payback is on how smooth the thicknesser operates afterwards. I never realized how far from new condition mine until after I cleaned it.
