Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

@JayL: Can't really tell what's holding up the armature. The motor itself is in a plastic housing that I couldn't pry open. But I probably was paranoid already last night because I managed to crack the plastic housing on the gear box so I didn't go for the motor.

I think I got good mileage out of it. Lasted about 18 months of heavy use. What probably did it was that I force-fed (as in tinutulak ko) large (2x2x8) rough-cut mahogany. Got overconfident about this tool.

Now, some math: I got it for P7.5k, tip-top condition. A Makita would go for about 4x that much. I read about solid reviews about Makitas that last many years (check out Amazon). With the use I devote to it, a Makita would probably be worth it. Only problem is the up-front investment. And that's a huge problem since I just recently plopped down my next 2-years' lunch money on a bandsaw!:D

Anybody know where a good Makita 2012NB can be had for a steal? Time to sell one of my kidneys.

@Willy: Yes, I observed some of the plastic grill atop the armature has actually melted. That is probably what caused the smoke as it fell and burned. I was never much for treating tools with respect. Now I know better.

Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

Looks like this experience just showed us a limit of the Ryobi Thicknesser. I wonder if a Makita will survive given the same situation.

If Ding does not fix the Thicknesser anymore then we know where to find parts as long as it's not the motor. 🙂

Thanks for sharing the experience.

@Willy Thanks for the info on motors. If it's plastic housing then over heat is an arch enemy. If it warps then the armature get mis aligned and from there a Domino Effect .... bad for the wallet.

Not too fast, Jay!

These parts will be stored for a future shop-made-jointer ala Armand! Wil just have to find a good motor for it.

Probably you can find a motor in Sulit. I see a lot of sellers importing / selling this Ryobi Thicknesser. Not a bad idea to inquire.

Based on what happened I'm inclined to asses ( at least if and when I decide to get one ) that the Ryobi Thicknesser is still a good tool price performance ratio wise. It just needs a bit of TLC

Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

I can see an overwhelming regard for Ryobi's and other cheap Sulit surplus products. Let me temper this a bit.

My Ryobi's and Ozito's are for less critical work requiring less accuracy: sanders, screwdrivers. Only surprising exception is the thicknesser which, I find still great value for money because it planes accurately, evenly, and can take abuse. Encouraged, I got a Ryobi drill press and Chop Saw. I'm wishing I have something better because accuracy is just not spot-on. The play is very small; but sometimes, that hair of a gap is just not tolerable.

If I could start over, I'd never get Ryobi's for TS, drill press, chop saw, perhaps, not a router either. But definitely I'd go for Ryobi's on sanders, screwdrivers, maybe circ saw, or even a planer since I use these tools for rough work. The thicknesser, from experience, is a gem.

@ balarila,

Now I learned somethings here in the discussions regarding the breakdown of your thicknesser, I guess whether our power tools are the expensive or the cheapos, we should maintain some sort of respect for their limitations simply to prolong their life's usefulness or be able to maximize its potentials and ROI. :agree: 😀

LOL, hahahaha, Bro Ding, so sorry about the total breakdown of your thicknesser, I guess its time to be looking for a better replacement like a MAKITA, DEWALT, BOSCH, or DELTA brands in the net for better performance and durability. Oh here's a link on the Delta ShopMaster that you may read its review and some tips on the tool itself and it is also 51% off. 😉

Salamat.

Precisely my aim in sharing this mishap, embarassing as it may be: so people can learn from my inane mistakes.

Malapit na Pasko. Maybe I should be dropping hints with SWMBO.

Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

Anyway, here's my contribution to this thread,

I just don't know if this tool can be considered as junk, seconds hand or surplus, possibly to non metal worker or non welder this tool will not register or may look ridiculous but for a welder or metal worker, this tool or gadget is very important and is a must specially for stick welders.

A few days ago as I was in the flea market near our town looking for some used wheel bearings and sturdy big springs to be used for my welding positioner, I chanced upon a vendor selling old stuffs like bike wheels/pedals, nut and bolts/screws, old wrenches, old kitchen utensils, assorted sizes of bottles and cans etc, etc, so in other words its a small shop selling used stuffs and people would go to that vendor just to buy this and that which can still be used for their needs. OK, as I was going over his old stuffs/tools I stumbled upon some of his rusted wrenches, can openers, kitchen utensils and some screw drivers on a large hook hanging in one corner and saw this tool and I said to myself what a pleasant surprise, this tool will be very useful for me even though its rusting all over, so I bought it immediately with some price huggling pa and I got it for 90 bucks from the original asking price of 150 bucks. And forgot all about the wheel bearing and spring, LOL 😀

I never thought that I'll be sharing this with you since its all rusted but after cleaning, sanding and complete de-rusting, dipping in Turco and wiping with grease, painted the handle and sharpened the tips, the gadget appeared somewhat brand new again and with its original markings, ATLAS, from USA, and a caution markings of WEAR EYE PROTECTION. After a while checked AMAZON for its price and was surprised to find out its $3.00 up to $12.00 brand new and depending from the origin and manufacturer. :p

OK here it is, the very simple tool or gadget : A WELDER's CHIPPING HAMMER.

This is the final result after cleaning and de-rusting the tool. Sorry I did not take some pics of its previous appearance for comparison since it never entered my mind to share this or post it here .

That's a good chipping hammer. The spring handle absorb the shocks.

I don't think the spring acts a spring, I believe its there serving as a handle and won't absorb anything...

Somehow I feel it does absorb impact ripples ... or maybe it's just me.

The one I have looks like Bro Rosy's tool.

Puro carbide na yata uso ngayon ... me pa testing pa

Had a colleage from the west coast hand-carried these:

Lock miter bit:

Using this bit requires accurate bit height adjustments. Hopefully the RZ100 can help me with that

Supports many router models

2 sets of 24" and 2 sets of 40" in one package. Well i bought two packages! it was 175$ last week, this week price went to 184$ the framing blocks are going to be sweet i think

I would have wante to buy 4 sets... but its really friggin expensive. But the same can be said of clamps that size here.
