Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

Stanley tie rod fork (ACE) and a generic lever type tie rod separator tool.

tried it on when i replaced the ball joints of my truck. didn't know then that the lever type then was failing. didn't rely on the tool's pressure to remove the balljoint (hammered the knuckle also) but still it failed...looks like made of cast iron (hi carbon steel) aka "pundido" or "aserado?"

Brand new opening was 29/32 inch. after popping off 4 ball joints, the opening is now greater than 1-1/4 inch. the end was also flared. but still, it popped off the joints i need to remove.

I was thinking the same thing. The Snap On I posted is a bargain. I got these cheap so am selling cheap. You can pound all day and the tool's metal will hold.

i have an unbranded ball joint separator tool (the one busted above) and so far it's still doing its job after a total of 6 ball joint separations. this one i got from hans tools several years ago worth 600. unlike the one above which is sort of carbonized the one i got is silver/metallic in color but not rusting.

@ miked

I'm sure that "pundido" in local lingo means cast (cast iron, cast bronze, etc.) Difficult to weld because it melts easily but i guess that's why it's easy to pour in a mold. It sure is brittle, complicated-ly shaped stuff like pulleys, the metal body of a pressure washer, cast iron cookware, c clamp bodies, and that stanley tool shown are pundido. It need not be brittle, rated at least to some PSI value before it breaks and there is the nodular/ductile variety but it isn't much used on DIY grade tools. I've had a cheap c clamp break on me too =).

Aserado i believe means steel that can be hardened through heat treatment. I'm aware acero is the spanish word for steel. If it is so, carbon steel (like grade 5 bolts) is one. Edge tools like saws, chisels are aserado.
I've heard the term used on anything that holds an edge like HSS hacksaw blades and drill bits too.

"Subo" i'm sure is if an aserado has gone through heat treatment and is in the hardened state. One can ruin the temper (the steel will soften)in a carbon steel tool if subjected to extreme heat though (to which High Speed Steel is impervious of.)

@spykersetter, suki ka rin pala ng Harbor Freight.

How do you buy from them? Last time I tried they only accept US issued credit cards for online purchase.
