Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

Masyadong mahal Starrett ... Mitutoyo na lang kinuha ko bro. Square din naman and accurate.

Kung kukuha ng squares dapat yun hardened. I had hardened and non hardened Mitutoyo sets and there really is a difference.

I sold the non hardened one for 4K. It was slightly used.

ayun o, Rosy, takbo na kila Jay before going to Panda.... if you want decent squares naman, Panda got them. look for SOBA engineering squares... the 4" costs around Php600.00 iirc.

Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

While we're on the topic of squares, I got this Pinnacle combination square Dec last year from Woodcraft (US).

Reviews looked good and price is OK. WHen I got it, build looked excellent. The rule was accurate and well marked. Anvil is heavy and sturdy. What was wrong was the screw with the hook that is inside the anvil that one tightens a knob on so that the hook grabs onto the rule to seat it firmly in the anvil. After some use, i.e. loosening, sliding the rule in the anvil, and re-tightening; the hook inside wore off to the point that the rule started to wobble. It appears that the metal used for this part is too soft. I "retightened" by bending this part slightly so that whatever is left of the hook would grab onto the rule. But it still kept eroding. Now, the hook has completely broken off.

Got me a Stanley for now at DIY.

Update on my broken Pinnacle Combination Square bought from Woodcraft.

Emailed Woodcraft and told them about my predicament. They are now shipping the broken part to me here in the Philippines FOC. When it arrives, I will become a Woodcraft suki.

Sana customer service here approximates that.

MIDWEST Straight Cut Aviation Snip

Use to cut Metal Furring or any thin sheet of metal

Damage around 550peso

haven't used it so no reviews yet but i have tried it a little bit it seem cutting a paper on a thin metal sheet.

and it has a micro teeth so that it won't slip it easily grips on the thin metal sheet while cutting

Update: Got the replacement part. They shipped it via 2-day FedEx! Kudos to Woodcraft. But customs taxed me P550 for a silly little screw and knob! Grrr...

Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

^ Any idea how that P550 was arrived at and how item was declared. IIRC from previous instances of having to have replacement/repaired items shipped, items declared as replacement or repaired are assessed differently (lower) than brand new. Of course, you have to get the sender to declare it correctly, which they may or may not be able to accomodate.

Just curious, does the replacement part fix what sounded like a design or material defect, or just reset the time to next failure.

Have yet to be able to measure (and figure out how to measure) any difference in squareness of Stanley vs. Kapro vs. Soba vs. Starrett. Just by eye and digital angle gauge, the units I have are equally square. The woodworking gauges usually have resolution of 0.1 deg (and unspecified accuracy), not enough to check conformance to so-called BS 939 standard of <0.001 in/in (<0.06 deg) or to measure differences in conforming squares. Maybe some kind of rig involving a dial indicator...

Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

As far as customs fees, regardless of item value, the documentation fee cost at least 300-400 pesos already. Then 12% for VAT based on item value+shipping cost, then add the taxes. So Php550 is about the minimum already. So its either that, or its totally waived.

I have my parcels sent to the province (zambales), customs there are more lax. I get my small items from ebay without a hitch.

Pero hassle talaga Fedex, mahina sila sa customs as per my experience.

If its with receipt, then just assumed that it goes to gov't coffers, whether it get stolen or not, is a different matter.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.

Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

Item was declared as zero value. It was delivered to my office and secretary had the good intention of advancing payment so I could not fault her for that. If I had been there, I'd have asked FedEx (Air21) to take it back or keep it for themselves. Heck, I already got a Stanley for P750!

You're right, Guad. The replacement part just reset the clock to zero until the next failure.

Like you, I can't see much diff on squareness among skwalas. I figure any diff would be obliterated by how thick your pencil mark would be. I just decided to get the more expensive Pinnacle thinking that the combi-square has moving parts so better get a good, durable one. Wrong assumption!

Re: Show your recent tool purchase/s ( The Tool/s Loot )

I have good experience with the 6-inch Empire combi square, pretty accurate. The irony is, their 12-inch rafter square is pretty off ( around 1/8" at the 12-inch mark), I just gave it away to one of my workers. I assumed since the 6-inch combi square is good, the 12 inch rafter should be good also, wrong!

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.

One can't go wrong with Midwest or New Old Stock Irwin Prosnip aviation snips. Both brands USA Made and at par with each other.
