Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

Hmmm...very useful tip, Sonny. Never thought of it that way.

I still have the 5kW transformer I got from you. Built a stand for it, installed a fused switch and was starting to wire it into hanging sockets but got lazy. I guess I'll have to finish it now.

But, perhaps, I'll still get a dedicated xformer for the table saw since it's the most used 110V tool I have and I wheel it around in a stand with a base that can carry the xformer.

To be fair to the seller that I criticized earlier, he did text me later that he will pick up the AVR and have it checked up and see how it goes with his supplier.

Thanks for the tip.

Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

Hmmm So far I never had any problem with Stac Stabilizers powering up my power tools. All the while I thought these were better since these are servo controlled.

How I wish I could get a real 110V supply from Meralco. I remember Moji telling me he has 110V from the power company itself.

One time I run across a good Craftsman 2.5 HP 40 gallon air compressor with a very very good price. It looked brand new but was 110V.

Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

Update on my Samwon AVR.

The seller was kind enough to have my broken AVR picked up. After a few weeks, they delivered it back to me. But the motorcycle guy who delivered it had an accident. When he arrived, my AVR was dented all over and the rubber feet were sunk into the body. It still worked but looked like it went rolling down a rocky hill.

I returned it and, after a couple more weeks, I was sent a brand new one, but was charged P200 for delivery. I sighed and paid.

At least, AVR seems to work now.

Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

hey guys,

just wanna ask something...i am not too electrically inclined but at least i can lay out basic electrical wiring..

as you know i have the bosch 4100 ts and it runs on 110V supply..my stepdown is a deeco 2000 watts heavy duty transformer.

it never gets hot on routine table sawing and until recently...i have added a 110V 1200 watts vacuum cleaner hooked to the dust port of the saw..i found out then when these two together are running, i can sense that the saw's motor is slowing down but not really much but i am worried this will affect 100 percent of the time the performance of the saw's motor.

does it mean i need a step down with more oomph? say a 4000 watts?

thanks in advance and god bless.

V

Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

V, I think the vacuum and the 4100 combined are waaay more than 2000 Watts.

The TS is rated at 15 amps. Thats
15A x 110v = 1650 Watts

Since its AC we have to apply a power factor, lets assume 0.8:
1650 x 0.8 = 1320

1320+1200 = 2520

No wonder your TS is slowing down.

Yes, you need to upgrade your transformer. I forgot the typical recommended capacity allowance. I think its 30% (?). For example, if your load is 2520 watts your transformer should be able to give 30% more than that (3276 watts)

V. Looks like you're running on the thin side with those 2 hungry power tools on just 2000 watts.

I dedicate a 1500 watts step down stabilizer for my TS and I think it is still a bit lacking.

If it was me I'd get another transformer for the vacuum. I won't even be risking the two tools connected together to one source due to the hassle of repairing these US models in case something goes south for whatever reason.

I'm with Joey81's computations.

I also use minimum 14 gauge extensions and longer extensions are 12 gauge ..... for woodwork power tools.

Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

hehe i just needed some confirmation from you guys..

its logical to think that my ts which is rated at 1500 watts together with a 1200 watts vacuum when put together will drain the 2000 watts transformer.

the ts is working fine but i guess i need to get another transformer for the vacuum..otherwise, i will buy another vacuum rated to run on 220V...which means i will throw the 110V vac away!

thanks thanks thanks

Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

Maybe get another big transformer .... so you can use more 110V tools. The better power tools mostly are 110V har har har.

Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

I have my xformer in the cabinet/stand of my table saw so my TS is forever plugged into it. Aside from preventing overload (because it's tough to plug in another tool), I'll neve make the mistake of plugging my TS into 220V.

Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

Im not an electrical guy but based on others in the field the rule of thumb is to use a transformer rating 3x the rated load of rotating equipment because the starting current is thrice as much.
Im using this for my TS4100: Php 7300.00 approx. landed price
.

5000 watts transformer for the TS 4100..the way to go indeed..

buti na lang hindi nag iinit si deeco 2000 watts. in use since last quarter of 2009..hehe..its very heavy and i believe it is a well made quality step down transformer.

I could use another step down transformer. How much is the Deeco bro?

Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

Aaaaaarghhhh!!!!!

Woke up early. Sun is shining. Everything is dry. Birds chirping. Perfect day for woodworking.

Replaced router bit, set bit height, set router table fence. Plugged in the Samwon SVC-3000N,
heard the servo motor hum to life. Connected the 100V router to it. Flipped the switch to ON, pressed the green button (quick start).

Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Kaput. /dev/null

OFF, ON, press. Wala pa rin!

Normally, upon flipping the switch to ON, the voltage dial would go up and the LED turns red.
In this case neither is happening.

It may just be a blown fuse. Problem is I don't see anything that looks like a fuse.
Anyone encountered this problem? The AVR is already 2 years old and out of warranty.

Metalworking muna.

Re: Step-down Transformer, AVR thread (and Variac)

Had a second look at the AVR. Looks like one wire came loose.

I think this is where it used to be connected. I need a second/third opinion before I solder it.
