I have always bought my tools 70% by reviews and feedbacks (especially the ones not available locally), some coming from PHM(pinoyhandyman) and 30% by what I see.
Price also plays a factor but Quality plays more for me which eventually results to better value....
Kayo, how do you decide in buying tools?

Re: what influences you in buying tools?

More often than not I go by quality / price ratio and the reputation of the manufacturer & vendor. Feedback from forums help too.

Re: what influences you in buying tools?

ako naman eh usually by the brand and where the unit is made...

for mechanical tools, id prefer those made in germany or japan or us

and from the looks of the build...smooth lines and contour...

and the tool features..

but sometimes, i am forced to buy cheap tools when what i want is not available locally due to necessity.

take the case of the jet and makita saw TS.hehe

but i am glad i had the opportunity to test both.

That's right! Picked up a lot from the Pros. But then with budget constrains, and you come across a really cheap buy, then its just a matter of being careful with what you got. And if it breaks un-timingly, you know you've learned a lesson..haha..

that is how I learned too... :p what is important is we learn and remember the next time we buy... which is sometimes difficult especially with a price that is two or three times higher. 😮

Re: what influences you in buying tools?

i am impulsive when i buy tools, but 70% of the impulse is backed by confident reviews.

the rest is more of an "adventure" since wala pa ibang tao.. might as well buy it to see what sort of surprise i will get.... so far yung ryobi jigsaw lang ako masaya hahahaha

Re: what influences you in buying tools?

you get what you pay for, quality tools are normally expensive, but you get quality results.cheap tools bugs down easily, unexpectedly, creating bad results,i mean bad, kasi sayang yung wood, sometimes you crosses path with injury pa, asar talga..dati,bumibili ako ng tools basta mura, pagsisihan nalang pag ginamit, hindi kasi maganda resulta ng putol.it happens always, sometimes getting to the point of throwing away the tools.lately that i realized that reviews from magazines, internet and asking adviced from experienced person ,(especially you sir timber)is what really makes the difference.sayang talaga, ngyon ko lang na discover tong forum na to,kung noon pa,hindi ako nanghihinayang sa mga tools na nabili ko,kasi it's worth it,masaya habang ginagamit.kaya ngayon i have learned many lessons, before buying tools specially power tools-read,review,ask & try...buti nalang may mabait at mabuting loob na tao na gaya mo timber.mabuhay po!

Re: what influences you in buying tools?

well i doubt,....magtanong lang po,sir timber, bakit hindi ka nalang magtayo ng shop ng power tools & accessories that is only available abroad, since you have access of it.then you sell it to us or to any aspiring woodworker(of course at a fair price),diba thats a very big help, since alam mo almost evrything.

Re: what influences you in buying tools?

I don't have the money to do so... I can't afford to have what little money I have to sleep on a tool to wait for a buyer....

Re: what influences you in buying tools?

where can i buy hardboard,MDF na pre cut to smaller pcs

Try asking Formaply. No guarantees, but last time I asked manager (at the Scout location, not Mindanao Ave.), she had them saw into two pieces. Took a long time with their small dull handsaw. The worker said I could bring a circular saw next time.

Their MDF is dark brown in color though like lawanit. I don't know what this means vs. light colored MDF. It also has a noticeable formaldehyde smell if kept in confined space.

I don't know if high formaldehyde content is the case with all MDF sold locally.

Re: what influences you in buying tools?

how do you decide in buying tools?

Since nobody has mentioned it so far ... also the warranty.

Unfortunately, the top two brands are both unsatisfactory. Unless I misunderstand, Makita warranty against defects is zero duration on parts cost and infinite duration on labor cost. Zero on parts is unsatisfactory.

Bosch warranty is 6 months. In US it is one year. This is discriminatory and does not reflect well on a global company, to have country-specific warranty periods. It's like, 'what can we get away with in the Philippines'?

Between the two unsatisfactories, I would tend to lean towards the discriminatory Bosch warranty ... or maybe the Makita zero on expensive parts but infinite on cheap labor ... hard to say.
