Hi guys! Sorry this would be bit boring one. It's ashame for me to say that my thinking about DIY before was "why would I do it, I could just do my work and just hire any carpenter or plumber or whatever depending on my need. I could even just ask my father to do it since he was in construction before" anyway to cut the long story short, most of the time I ask for his assistance or hire someone I end up bit disappointed. I expect something more than what they do. "Sana mas malinis ng konit... sana ganito ganun...". So I've made up my mind to learn at least the basics of it and also to introduce my father to powertools. He was all manual user during his time.
So from googling and forum hopping, I found this very helpful group that answers almost all my questions in mind. And just recently with your approval I bought my very first handy tool (Skil Combo Kit) in my entire life. I hope it won't be the last. Hehe. Pathetic I know. Anyway, one of my goals also why I suddenly got interested with DIY is to make props (wood boxes, kid chair, easel, wood backgrounds) for my studio and also to make photo frames. I just can't stand buying synthetic wood frames anymore. I feel they make my photos and the frame itself look cheap. I want my dad or me if time permits to make frames using real wood. It makes it look more simple yet classy.
So right now I have, jig saw, sander, cordless drill. I'm thinking what to buy next that I would use more often.
A. Circular saw
B. Router
C. Table saw
D. Miter saw
Which comes first? Given a budget of course I want to buy them all at the same time. But one at a time for now. Again with your expertise, I appreciate shedding some light for the late bloomer like me.
Thanks a lot!
Re: What's next for me?
Hey bro MajorKen,
DIYing IMHO comes naturally, it is not planned, there is a time in our life that we have to do things or stuffs by ourselves and without the help of other people. We learn slowly and little by little and perhaps learn from our mistakes. DIYing has no set date for one to start, like I said it will just come naturally and because also there is the need for things to be done.
You are very lucky now that tools now a days have become very cheap and readily available. So much variations to choose from, from the diy grade up to the professional/industrial grade type of power tools. We now have the internet to view multiple power tools and their usage and the DIY projects they are showing in YouTube that surely inspires us, they become our guides, teachers or mentors so we may excel in our own projects.
With the power tools you have now, then you are on the right track, you will just perhaps have to add or acquire more as you go on with your intended wood projects, small or big. You see bro these power tools eh improvement lang yan ng mga hand tools, from hand saws to hand drills, coping saws, pait at katam, try to imagine their counter parts sa mga power tools, we have now the circular saws, the jig saws, electric hand planers, portable drill drivers, table saws etc, etc which all of these can be run by electricity or the rechargeable batteries, and these are just alternatives and yet woodworking still uses hand tools at the present, they simply compliment and go hand in hand.
When buying your power tools, buy them as needed first like perhaps a circular say to cut your plywood or plyboards or other wood stocks. You can also invest on another sander, perhaps a sheet sander or a finishing sander, then another one is an electric planer, I bet your dad have several hand planers already, a miter saw will also help a lot, it can be the manual first or perhaps if you can afford the electric one, then so on and so forth, it will really depend on your needs and use as you improve.
Well bro I guess sobrang haba na ng reply ko so just enjoy your DIYing projects and be proud of them, you are in good hand with the guidance of your father.
CHEERS and good luck to your new hobby !!!!!!!!!!  :groupwave:

Re: What's next for me?
Looking at your list looks like you will be on to woodworking with plywood for now. I'd choose the Circular Saw. A real good one that can be loaded with a Freud Blade.
............... and a Kreg Pocket Hole Jig.
If you are planning to get very good power tools then you might also want to consider 110V US domestic market issued models. Drawback is you will need a step down transformer to run these.

Thanks Rosy. You are right, I guess it's really just about time to be the man. Hehe.
@JayL, indeed the lists I made are the priority but I won't be surprised if the Kreg system will get ahead. Urgh! Hehe.
Good for you bro.. Welcome to the handymans side... Hehe
Find a small project and see what you think is needed.. Circular saw is recommended..

Re: What's next for me?
circular saw is very handy when it comes to woodworking..
and you can DIY it in to Table saw, which can be use as a miter saw.. very versatile...

On-Topic: For me I'd go for a router, but it's just because I'll be needing it very soon.
