the bench dogs that I have are either loose or too tight. this little mod should help others wanting or in the process of making a workbench with dogholes and dogs.
pictures are self explanatory, though just ring in if you have questions.
drill the initial hole through and a secondary hole just below the exit point to hold the ball.
the second hole would look like this...

fit the ball bearing to test the fit, it should be slightly loose that it has a play.
make the spring...
slightly crimp the end so that it hits the ball and not the wall.

from what they use to be to what they are now. fit is way better, easy to adjust lift or slide down. looseness or tightness can be controlled by spring tension.

the dog holes are 20mm (which is the forstner bit that I have) and the dogs are 3/4" hardwood dowels...

. Everybody seems to be consistent with dog hole sizes. Any reason why round dogs over square ones?
I gotta check the sawmills you gus mentioned from older posts for the dowels. Its a shame these are not readilly available
I was tempted once to use wooden pencils as dowels for the joinery practice i wanted to do 🙂

round dogs are very much easier to make. both the dogs and the holes...
