Re: 8 seater breakfast table
ahhhh
its not "drawed" but it is bored through
ive seen karpinteros use finishing nails as pins to poorly made mortise-tenons. The joints give in after awhile. especially for chairs.
I wonder how much added reinforcement pinning it with dowels make? anybody know any studies or stress test on it?
Re: 8 seater breakfast table
i wish i had been the one who made our 12 seater square formal dinning table.. sigh.
i may cut and sand the dowels flush since i may go for grooves as visual interests.
For the top. Iam planning to lay it directly on the frame with rough cut width and length. Then run a flush trim all around to have the top flushed with the aprons. The problem with this is that as it aproaches the legs, may konting "bump" coz the aprons and the legs are NOT perfectly flush... hmmm

why would you cut it flush? I suggest a slight overhang would cure your woes and hide the bump. I find overhangs to be beneficial in lots of ways especially for table tops... unless you want to highlight the aprons, is anything there of interest? 😀

Re: 8 seater breakfast table
the picture that iam basing the deisgn is flushed. Bo concept design (all nic eand squared and easy hehe) Eh yan yun ni-approve ng bro ko.
i also plan on cutting it flush. Then after wards i rout a groove along the sides in between the top and the apron.
Re: 8 seater breakfast table
will you be putting ebony plugs sa sides? that would be nice especially if the top is breadboarded...

Re: 8 seater breakfast table
after three months of LOA from the forum and the workshop... here i am faced with my brother's 8 seater breakfast table that i promised to him 2 months ago hehehe
i am going for the quick/easy/ and clean approach so nothing fancy. Plopped a 1/2" marine ply on top of the carcass. The ply is offset from the edge of the carcass. This will create a groove effect once the top is in place
i like these LOTUS goggles. this and the bit brace of LOTUS are the only quality tools ive seen from them so far. Kasya yung glasses ko diyan hehehe
looking ok so far. The table is a little over 8 feet so there is a retaso plywood at the other end
Re: 8 seater breakfast table
decided that its problematic to glue the ply to the carcass so i decided to use black gypsum screws instead. Counter sunk using Timber's counter sink bit (its awesome!)
tanguile 1"x12" s oriented across instead of long boards oriented along the stretch of the table... I think it looks better this way
hopefully i finish this by january
I am surprised that tanguile can handle the tensile stress. i can stand on the middle of the edge of the 2x4 tanguile thats 8 feet long without any problem
the boards still have to be jointed on my table saw

Re: 8 seater breakfast table
edge jointed the boards. My jointer is too small and my jointer sled for the table saw is too cumbersome so i used my CS straight guide to joint the edge then ran it through the table saw after.
first time i used chalk!
seems like a clean joint. but the others have a small deviation. but since i am running a groove in between boards, it diesnt really matter
The arrow shows where i will run the boards on the router table to create the groove

Re: 8 seater breakfast table
oo nga eh. That day i have a Hog Federation meeting ( or was it our corporate xmas party??)
Now my next problem is how to glue the boards to the ply. Some of the boards are a little cupped. I also suspect that the boards will shrink a little bit once its inside my bro's house since these have been outside for 3 months, Hence the grooves to disguise any wood movement.
Re: 8 seater breakfast table
there should be little expansion lengthwise Ben, but always better to be on the safe side. I would probably screw each board onto the ply with holes on the ply a bit larger for the screws to move on...

Re: 8 seater breakfast table
the ply is half inch and the boards are around 3/4.
I want the screws hidden. I might try screwing from underneath the ply. hmmmm
