Re: A Simple Speaker Stand

initially though of using spikes as well, but since I don't want the speaker veneer to be damaged, I am considering using metal balls...

Re: A Simple Speaker Stand

I have read about those as well. I believe there are different school of thoughts about decoupling but as far as I've understand it, you should be able to avoid transferring the speaker's motion into the stand. Some like to use solid decouplers (spikes, balls, etc) and some like to use soft materials (rubber, foam, etc).

My question then is, wouldn't it be more effective to have a "lesser solid" with large contact point in between the speaker and stand than to have a solid item with less foot print?

well, it is really quite misleading sometimes which is better (decouplers, solid and soft materials) as both have their following. I am leaning on the train of thought that the Harbeth's thin wall construction and that its box is also a part of the sound it produces thus giving it full access to sound freely with as little contact as possible. That I guess should answer the contact point for the speaker to stand question too.. at least that is how I think it should be, but right or wrong I can always design another 😀
I have been reading on speaker stand designs and really there isn't any science as of this time that will work for all. some uses leather cladding on the the speaker base (not good for thin walled designs, another will incorporate spikes (can damage the veneer), others like the skylans (preferred by Harbeth users) uses metal that has the base open (for C7ES3 speakers). but I prefer wood and also save money (mahal din kasi ng skylan stands) and of course match my rack too...
I guess as you mentioned "you should be able to avoid transferring the speaker's motion into the stand." this is the best solution that I can find that will suit my design (using ball bearings between the speaker and the stands) and should I need to decouple some more, I can either have spikes on the stands to the floor or just add bearings as well...
so much designs to choose from, so much knowledge imparted on these stands but there is really no one solution for all... very confusing... :p:p

Re: A Simple Speaker Stand

Sabagay, maybe only a hand-on trail would definitely give the best impression of what cold give better sonics in you current setup. Also, since thin walled pala yung Harbeth's as you mentioned so parang "kahon" effect (yung intrument ha) pala sya.

Hanggang ngayon yung BS speakers ko nasa monobloc stools pa. Tapos nasa sala so hindi ko macontain yung space at magkaroon ng room treatment 🙁

Tagal naman ng Harbeth's mo 😀

Re: A Simple Speaker Stand

got the blocks drilled to accept the ball bearings, then made a jig to cut the corners on the ts (which I find to be safer than on the miter saw)...

finished ten making sure I have spare in case something goes wrong...

then with another jig, this time on the CMS (compound miter saw) I cut the angled profile for the fronts.

Re: A Simple Speaker Stand

glue-up was clinical, making sure everything is square and mounted tight.

once the glue dried, I chamfered the ends and rounded the sides...

Hmmm...hindi po ba dapat nauna yung rounding and/or chamfering bago yung gluing? 😀

Wala lang, yung lang naisip ko. Nevertheless, I like it a lot!

tama ka brad. dapat nga nauna, but since I made the mistake of gluing the brackets first I made do with what I can. the results came out better in the end with a slight shape that gives the brackets a nice profile. I did not cut the miters intentionally since I want the brackets to reference everything. from the desired lengths to the chamfers...
it was good that I made that error, I think it gave it a bit more personality... sabi nga nila eh, design feature yan 😀

Re: A Simple Speaker Stand

finally some time to work, glued na sila...

mocking the same size as the bottom of a compact 7.

this is how it would look if the speaker is facing you.

Re: A Simple Speaker Stand

Another nice set Timber. The material you used seems to be more yellowish in color. What kind of wood did you use?

Mahogany pa rin yan Jarod, its starting to change color due to long exposure sa elements. it should turn reddish and into red mahogany color given more time, I will stain it only to speed the color change lang.

Re: A Simple Speaker Stand

I see. I already like the color as it is unless the main item will be a different shade 😀

it will have the same finishing schedule as my rack since they should match each other...
