Im planning to make a simple table as well as a cabinet.

i do have the following questions and any advice is appreciated. I'm a newbie when it comes to woodworking. :p

for the table - I am thinking of using a torsion box as a table top.. for this i am thinking of 3/4" marine plywood then for the grids inside - maybe some 9mm plywood?

as for the the sides, i'll just use 2x2s. for the base, a couple of 2x4s and 2x2s as well.. is this setup ok? also, there's a hardware store near here that says they sell kiln-dried 2x2s,2x4s..is it ok to buy that? i asked for the type of wood but all he said was its local. i went to ace hardware and they said that the wood is tanguile. both says their wood are not treated yet..do i have to? the one at ace hardware said that its not really needed and if i want i can use solignum, about 500 for 1 gallon.

originally, i was thinking of making a table that uses 2x6s as table tops but i find that the 2x6s are kind of heavy especially the ones i see at ace.

so was thinking of instead using 2x6s as table top, i'd use a torsion box using marine plywood so it is lighter..

this is just a temporary table anyhow but is my thinking correct? even if its temporary, i'd still want it to be usable for quite some time. 🙂

for the cabinets..is it ok to buy at a local hardware for a marine plywood? the 3/4" he quoted me is around 900 pesos..or should i buy from some stores..if yes, any stores you might suggest i could try?

for the cabinets..im thinking of using marine plywood as well. and then just glue a laminate.. marine plywood because i saw at the site of world class laminates that i need to cut those with at least a circular saw..and truth be told, i don't have any power tools except a hammer drill. any advice? i don't want to purchase power tools as of the moment and just want to make something with the tools i currently have now, money being the most important reason why i can't buy power tools atm. 😀

basically these are all the tools i have. hammer drill, 2 handsaws (one is a backsaw). some chisels, hammer and mallet, and a small hand axe 🙂

thanks!

ps..i have a couple of coco lumbers..some 2x2s to 2x6s..and then some na im not sure of the size..any good use for them? not sure if they can be used for bbq...hehe

Re: advice needed

with the current set of tools you have it will be a very difficult task to build the projects you have in mind but im not saying it's not possible, just difficult. For the cabinet using mdf you may want to read bryant's[COLOR="Blue"] [COLOR="Blue"]thread
..and here's the link for [COLOR="Blue"]my torsion box build that may help you.

Re: advice needed

thanks sir for the links. I understand it is difficult and i'm already expecting that. also, i do not want to invest in tools right now as I want to see if this is for me. I do not want to spend money buying tools only to find out later on that I do not have the time nor the drive to do woodworking. Like with my camera gear, i find that i have no time to use it so the camera just 3 months old is just inside the bag. 😮 Let's just say that I'm testing the waters for now. 🙂

btw, is the block plane from Standley a good handplane to buy?

Re: advice needed

let's start again kung pwede. Why do you need a torsion box top? how big is the top you intend to make anyway? Feed us some information like dimensions and drawings if you have any.
with plywood you don't need any powertool at all, you can work with handtools like a saw, a hammer and a screwdriver if you plan on using screws...

Re: advice needed

sir timber : i read that a torsion box top is lighter than a table top of solid wood because of its construction but still sturdy enough to support things.

i was thinking of making a table top with the dimensions of about 4 feet in length and about 30 inches width.

i'll post the url where i saw a plan for the table i initially intended to make.

http://ana-white.com/2009/11/plan-modern-farmhouse-table-knock-off.html

this is the link where it shows how to make a table. the table top for that plan is a couple of 2x6s. but when i went to ace hardware, i found out that the wood they offer are heavy and it's one of the reason i opted to use a torsion box instead. i wanted the table to be moved easily when needed also im a bit out of luck as of now to find a lumber that is light and not rough cut.

anyhow, what i was thinking was do the plan until here :

then instead of using the 2x6s, i'd put the torsion box. i'd adjust the railings to accommodate the height of the torsion box so it would be flush with the aprons.

is what im thinking feasible?

and yes, im planning on using screws 🙂

thanks

first of all, you don't need a torsion box, it will only make it heavier. unless you plan on using 1/4 plywood.
make the frame, put a center support and lay the 3/4 plywood top and you're done. It will hold well since it has good strength on it.
A torsion box is ideal if you intend to make a thick top piece which I don't think you will be needing.

Re: advice needed

Thank you sir for the advice. Well, the lighter it is, the better. as long as it's still sturdy. So i guess i'll follow your advice. The center support you're saying is the one like that in the picture I posted? then is it ok to just screw the 3/4 plywood to the support?

and last question sir, a typical hardware store near here said they're selling 3/4 marine plywood as well as kiln-dried lumber. would it be ok to buy those?

thank you

Re: advice needed

the table will be multi-purpose. It should be able to be used as a breakfast table, or patungan ng mga gamit. basically, anything that fancies me kaya one thing i want is that it is light para hindi ako mahirapan i-move if needed. 😀
