Re: all aluminium router table top

i later found out that the nut holding the bearing stopper of the pattern bit had slipped causing the mishap..the bearing was wandering up and down as i moved the router.agh!

even though this defect wont affect the performance, i am disappointed aesthetically speaking.
...

Does this mean any straight bit can be converted in to a top bearing flush trim / pattern bit? Provided of course the bearing is of the same diameter as the bit. Is this available locally?

Re: all aluminium router table top

@joey,

in theory yes but the collet wont have a big footprint so to speak in a reduced shank length due to addition of the bearing and stop collar. buy instead a dedicated pattern bit instead of this idea.

@timber,
i wonder how whiteside made their own pattern bit.
the whiteside 1/4" length pattern bit you showed me looks enticing for shallow mortising, inlay etc.

i am listing my orders for the fastbreak 5th hehe

technically Yes it can be converted, but should you, would have to say you should NOT. the pattern bit has a sort of a rabbet that separates the bearing from the bit, small but enough to allow a small space for the bearing to move freely. Besides, a pattern bit cost a few pesos more than a straight bit, so go on the side of safety...
