the top and bottom shelf materials were supplied. they seem very old, dense and very stable. had to remove some cement on it then checked for nails(yes they are reclaimed).
an initial planning to see what is underneath...
seems very nice, very tight grains. checking with winding sticks, the boards are slightly twisted with a little cupping on one side.
started handplaning to flatten one side.

then feed it to the thicknesser... and this came out...
and these are the chips that was taken off the board.
eventually got all four boards cleaned and leveled... chipped the thicknesser blade with one nail hiding... huhuhu, but all is fine since the boards came out very nice...
these boards are heavy... very heavy that we got tired very fast. had to check the thicknesser too so this is all for the day...

Re: Another Audio Bench...
That wood looks harder to plane than the mahogany we did before..hehe your arms must be like popeye's now..
Do you know what wood it is?
Re: Another Audio Bench...
oh, had a chance to plane some mahogany too, after that wood. after planning this wood, mahogany feels like peeling an apple... 😀
skype bro... may tanong ako.

sketched plan pa lang, looks very solid and very nice too.can't wait to see the final product...ang daming ideas na maidadagdag sa WW.
Re: Another Audio Bench...
By the looks of the grain and the fact that the wood is very heavy, you're probably working of some yakal. Very heavy and dense wood. Like you said, difficult to plane. I usually pass it through the planer and finish it with a belt sander. Nice thing about it is that its very stable. I haven't seen this wood react to much with changes in humidity. If you need more, there's usually a lot of stock in Taytay.
Re: Another Audio Bench...
had the tops cut to dimension, and had been hand planning for 4 days and sanding for 4 days too.
while cutting to final dimension, my tablesaw blade found this...
the wood was so tough and hard, people used concrete nails... huhuhu
chipped one of my blade teeth. dang.

Re: Another Audio Bench...
Timb I thought you have this device to detect embedded nails et al in wood. Did you use it on this run.
The finished wood looks great. What do you plan to do with the nail holes?

I actually knew there was a nail on it, I just didn't know it was a concrete nail ... and there was no way for me to remove it, hence the decision to cut through it... unfortunately it didn't :p

Re: Another Audio Bench...
The blade that hit the nail is now unusable? I guess that is the downside to using recycled wood our blades are always at risk..
That slab is looking good though..how will that bench look like?

( So you did run the metal detector and it did the job. In that case not the tool's fault. - I might be wrong assuming this since it can be visual that's why you knew the nail was there )
If it was regular nail you think the Bosch blade will survive it? From the pics the blade did cut almost half of the concrete nail.
I remember you have a 32 tooth Dewalt blade that came from me. Maybe this will be better for ripping.
