Re: Another Audio Bench...
I use pure vinegar. I just spritz a little around the jig every few days.
But good point. Maybe I can save a bit by diluting. Sorry, no idea about cats.
Re: Another Audio Bench...
Will the vinegar also work for polyester resin as well?
Sorry, Moji. Never worked with polyester resin.
Re: Another Audio Bench...
He-he. I have a similar spray bottle in my shop but it contains vinegar.
Vinegar is what I use for cleanup of epoxy on tools, clamps, and hands. I also spray vinegar on my boat jig so the dogs won't pee on them.
your dog pee's on your hands? 😮
hehehehe 😀
the spray bottle contains water which I use to wipe of the excess glue Joey, I also use a rag with it...

Re: Another Audio Bench...
started today by working on the second shelf. after gluing I work on flattening the board by handplaning across the grain.
I have amassed 5 buckets full of shavings already during this build, two of which came from the handplane
the board did finish fine after the smoothing plane and card scraper. then after a coat of shellac the grain just pops out
the other boards came out fine as well...

Re: Another Audio Bench...
I also started cutting materials for the legs.
cleaned them
until it was satisfactory
then an option arrived, just what the doctor ordered. a darker wood for the legs which was what the owner wanted.
will start working on it tomorrow as the day ended on me

Re: Another Audio Bench...
You didn't use your no.4 for rough planing did you? :p
Re: Another Audio Bench...
started the day trying my hand with shellac... here the first 10 coats (done btw in 1 hour)
then I decided to cut the leg material which is a dark wood (unknown species to me), very hard and turns out to have checks (cracks)...
not only that, I also found the back portion had a very uneven surface. something I can correct, but will make the wood thinner than I wanted.
so I decided to go back to the pre-cut mahogany which I intended for the legs, and decided to cut several more so I can have thicker legs for the table.

Re: Another Audio Bench...
started by cutting one end and profiled it with a subtle angle.
then, individually I cut the recess to fit each shelf snug. here they are for the top shelf.
then test fitting comes before I move to see if they would fall in place.
they do fit nice, but still lots to do.

Re: Another Audio Bench...
moving on, I choose the screws that I like to use...
lay-out the center one at a time and head for the drill press. start by cutting the hole for the screw head to fit into...
then the hole for the threaded part.

Re: Another Audio Bench...
another dry test fit. after cutting the shelves to size...
and it does look good.
still had several minutes, I chose to shellac the leg end until it was time to come home...
now I wait if the owner still wants the legs darker (which I can stain) or keep it as it is. looks good either way.

Re: Another Audio Bench...
Coming out perfectly!
If the owner preferred darker legs, can the stain get through the shellac into the wood? Or will you be using the stain as more of a glaze?

I did seal the leg end only so if the owner decided to stain, the leg end will be close to the color of the whole and not darker.
the owner decided not to stain, great for me, one less process and drying time averted.... 😉
