Mga sirs....

I would like to ask your opinion on antique furniture...

di po ba ang antique eh yung medyo napagdaanan na ang matagal na panahon...

gaano po ba katagal na panahon yun para matawag na na antique...
i know the older the better pero when do we start calling it an antique...
sir's yung mga nagawa nyo na mga first set of furniture you've made do you consider them antique already?

if ang kahoy po ba na ginamit pag gawa ng furniture eh medyo matagal na, yung furniture ba automatic pede tawagin na antique?
ex. reclaimed wood from a 50yr old house or older.... if ginawa mo bang table ang long floor slabs nun eh antique na ang table na yun?

Sa bohol po kasi meron dun mga puno na old folks claim to be more than 50yrs old .. some more than 100yrs old. the younger ones are usually cut down to make coffins sa town namin if meron matatanda na namatay. And by God, those coffins are solid and heavy.... made of Molave, Lawaan, or Kamagong. This we do in respect of our town elders - never once did I see a modern coffin used in my 35yrs of existence. Did we just bury our old folks in antique coffins?

Pede po din ba sabihin na if we cut a 50-100yr old tree, and make furniture eh antique na din siya?

thanks po....

from Wikipedia "Antiques furniture is the term for collectible interior furnishings of considerable age; often its age, rarity, condition, utility, or other unique features makes the furniture desirable.

I think the age of the wood don't count. Design and craftmanship will be more of a factor.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.

Ok, i'll try.

Antique means old. No definite criteria but... Like something that was used by your grandmother, especially when the style comes from another time (like pre/post war art deco.) When sensibilities/taste, and resources were different; when it's handed down and has some sentimental value to someone.

When airconditioning or even electric fans were not common place, you could see why the weaved(whatdya call that?) bottomed chairs, beds, rockers were made, a leather lazy-boy or sofa would be unthinkable. When there's so much trees it's actually cheaper to use wood on bottom drawers and cabinet backs instead of MDF (if mdf already existed, which you can only get in the provincial capitol, which often is a carabao ride and half-day bus away from you.)

My grandmother- a frugal ilocana who was so poor she had to put several papayas to "stretch" a can of sardines to feed 6 children- she bought a bed in the mercado (palengke) in cagayan in the 60's... it was made of kamagong. LOL, the 10 foot stretchers, the headboard and legs- just wood from the local mountain, put together by bed bolts that had a square head- di pa uso nun yung hex.

In intramuros, there's a museum that has a few furnitures that came from the turn of the 19th century... it appears a house often have an altar table back then... and that they're nuts about bone inlay.

======

I keep hearing that bohol's still a pristine place with laid back people. You guys even have a mahogany forest. Driving through Ilocos region, or even to the other side of sierra madre, to nueva vizcaya, i can't help but shake my head with the sight of denuded mountains.

(One of the molave trees i planted fell last year from a typhoon, Grrrr.)

Re: Antique Furniture from Old Tress / Reclaimed lumber

So the age of the material isn't a factor - the design and craftsmanship (old techniques) does.

@bigfoot2
So can we say we make a 16th imitation of a victorian chair using old furniture making techniques (joinery) today using non traditional furniture grade wood can be considered an "antique furniture"...

hmmm interesting points...
... handed down with some sentimental value
... design from a different era

@owyn,
yes sir, mga 20yrs na po yang man-made forrest of molave, lawaan, and some narra trees going to chocolate hills. Biruin mo 20yrs na maliit pa din. Ni require po kami magtanim nun bumibili kami ng molave sapling at then was P20 para itanim sa area na yun.

I still remember back breaking labor in chopping a molave stump using an axe para lang gawing firewood.. hayz... Noon kasi din na ginagamit ang mga stump or yung outer portion.. ngayon nauso yang driftwood designs grrr kung sinimulan ko lang ang ganun dati sana may antique na ako ngayon.. hehehehe

"Antique design" maybe, but the furniture itself to be called antique, I doubt. Anyway, don't be too engrossed in the antique stuff, be more on the design and craftmanship. Not all antique stuff are good.

Re: Antique Furniture from Old Tress / Reclaimed lumber

I was told that anything that has aged more than 100 years old is considered antique. So antique wood is antique, but when made into furniture becomes new furniture with old wood... the design will vary, I don't think that there is an antique design though :D... you can follow 18th century designs but that doesn't make it an antique design since they are still in use nowadays.

Re: Antique Furniture from Old Tress / Reclaimed lumber

How is it decided whether someone is eligible for an old-wood coffin? Is there a minimum age at time of death? Minimum level of respectability? Or is it subjective/in beholder eye, like ... apparently, the definition of antique?

antique wood-furniture
antique-wood furniture
antique-design furniture
antique-made furniture (i.e., made by antique carpenter)
