these are solid wood mission sofa, influenced by the arts and craft style.
a piece that i believe will bring an upscale look into any room.

i built this sofa to compliment the morris chair that i already built, and to make it more wholesome, i will be building another morris chair to complete the group ( pampamilya ika nga ).

the sofa is nothing more than a morris chair style, except that it will be longer in width, and having multiple vertical slats at the back ( no curved slats this time )

constructed from very heavy and sturdy yakal hardwood, it's straight lines speak of simplicity , functionality, durability and style. a peice that will last...

i will post the pics that i accumulated from the start, and it is just recently that i have finished the "gruesome" :hween: (tama ba word ko ? ) preparation of this project . it took me the whole summer up until this rainy season just mortising and tenoning this "two" projects. :chop:

legs glue ups...

preparing the hind or rear legs...

cut a template and register the pattern to the wood to be cut.

then jigsawed...

screwed the template...

then route with a pattern bit...

assembly time

assemble the side first...

i begin by joining a set of slats to the side rail, no need to put glue if they fit snugly, if they are too loose put a spot of glue to the mortise to prevent from rattling.

then glue and clamp the rails to the legs...

Re: arts and craft style sofa ( morris chair longer version )

and this is what i have done recently, glued the center seat support rail, to the front and back stretcher. i used the side assembly ( not yet glued ) as support during the glue ups...

because of the size of the project, i assemble the pieces inside the house ( para hindi na mahirapang ipasok )

Yow! It must hurt to cut wide planks to this!

How much did you get your Yakal for?

Galing!

@jonathan,

sabi ko na nga ba eh..me niluluto ka na naman sa woodshop mo..hehe..continuation of a nice project to last several lifetimes.

why yakal in the first place? there are "softer" and "lighter" native woods to start with..like the red lauan...mahogany or something else?

the reason why i shy away from yakal is its density..carbides are expensive...did you check your pattern bits if they are still worth for another future project?

i wonder if you sanded everything before assembly.

simply great job there!

i opted for yakal wood, kasi, like what you said, i wanted my piece to last a lifetime, hindi ko tuloy malimutan yung link na pi-nost ni sir owyn, words from alfredo j. luz sr, about the 3 rules... hindi lang siguro my lifetime, hangang sa kanunu-nunuan pa siguro ito... :old:

and probably this will be my last yakal projects,
next time i'll be having those easy to access wood like tanguile, red lauan, or mahogany
ang hirap maghanap ng wood, and i don't have a proper tools to cut it to a desired thickness.
it just happen na nakakita ako at nakapili ako ng yakal sa wilcon na well planed but not thickened, na ideal for my project, and i payed a fee for a delivery, bulakan pa kasi.
wala akong sasakyan na paglalagyan ng mga woods
better have a pick-up truck para maka hawl ng wood.

hindi lang yung density docV, pati yung weight nya...
and those chairs will be having a permanent place in our house

doing fine pa naman mga carbide tips ng bits ko...soft wood naman na yung mga susunod na projects eh...:fly:

and yes they are well sanded, all are ready for finishing, before their assembly. siguro konting liha liha na lang.
i've put also wood filler on some imperfections, like tearouts, yakal are very difficult to plane.

:thanks: docV...
