hi,

in the absence of a 90 degree clamp, how would you ensure a perpendicular assembly of a screwed butt jointed 2x4? sorry for the terms, used because they sound nasty...

what i am currently thinking is this:
- clamp 2 squares on the ouside or inside of the joined pieces - ensures that pieces are perpendicular
- clamp 2 straight edges on top and under - ensures levelness of joined pieces

any other ideas?

Can you not fabricate some Clamp It assembly squares like this out of wood first? You can always use those later for other projects.

Re: assembling 90 degree angle tips

this is what I use when I make carcasses, should work for you as well, it is just a piece of SQUARED scrap plywood with two holes for the clamp heads to hold onto.

Re: assembling 90 degree angle tips

I'm assuming the screws will pull the joint together, so the clamps are just to get the perpendicular pieces square. If I assume correctly then about just bracing the two pieces with a diagonal piece after using a square to true them? This is how the carpenters do it.

I have some pretty lousy miter clamps that I seldom use anymore. If ever I do you them it is only to keep the assembly reasonably together while I true everything up with a square and put in braces, screws or nails.

Re: assembling 90 degree angle tips

I've always wondered how good this clamp design can be.

http://www.amazon.com/Kreg-KHC-90DCC-90-degree-Corner-Clamp/dp/B001DCEN4I/ref=xs_gb_20_left-3_7_B001DCEN4I?pf_rd_p=451293501&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_t=701&pf_rd_i=20&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0DHPSZ0KB3WCXSR7PK6M

In my experience having 90 deg clamping tools can be really useful for novices. It makes things a lot easier.

Too bad we don't get much easier access to these. 90 degree Clamp ITs are now on sale at rockler for only $6 each. Best price I've seen these go on sale.

I purchased a few pieces before to try and test and had regretted not purchasing more. These are what I managed to get. Two small and two big ones. To be really effective I reckon 4 of each size is needed.

A flat working surface helps a lot too.

Thanks for sharing your pics. It's really a lot better to see some things in action to get a better grasp on how they work and probably appreciate it more then.

Re: assembling 90 degree angle tips

Thanks for bringing the subject up too. Now I'm thinking to weld some scrap angles bars to make 90 deg Clamp Its but for welding purposes. I just don't know if I could easily make these be truly 90 deg. Anyway I'll try when I get the chance.
