Re: Balarila's Woodworking Attempts

Kung papalitan mo ung mga potentiometers hanap ka ng ALPS. This is what modifiers use on this amp. Kung ala ka makita kahit ung sa Alexan na high end nila para maganda na at secured sa dust and contaminants. That will eliminate the scratching noise when you turn the knobs. Kung ala paring maganda try to check out TYSON ELECTRONICS along sumulong hiway bayan b4 you reach the stoplight of Marikina sports center. It's on your right after MINI-Stop yata yon or 7-11 coming from the foot of the Marikina bridge. Marami silang NOS na Pots na Japan made pa. sa Deeco unlesss you know the brand you need di sila masyado magaling maghanap. Kung ano nalang ang ibibigay sayo.

Sir Willy. Parang wala na ang Tyson doon. Ukay ukay ang nakita ko sa pwesto nila. Di ko lang alam kung saan lumipat.

Ganoon ba? Tsk, Tsk, sign of economic change siguro. There is another store but it specializes in Car Stereos pero they were selling also some electronic parts. I got my speakers from them for my home theater set up. Pang car speakers ang ginamit kong pang baffles and book shelf speakers.:D
Its at the opposite side of the Marikina bridge going to cubao. Once you descend from the bridge nasa right sya after the first kanto where most FX jeeps turn to make a short/long cut to LOYOLA MEMORIAL PARK. I forgot the name of the store but you'll recognize it with the sub woofer boxes displayed.

Re: Balarila's Woodworking Attempts

Oo nga, Willy. I actually went there a few days ago and, although the Tyson's sign was still there, pagpasok ko ukay-ukay.

I actually texted you that day pero baka I got the wrong number.

I called Alexan, too. They said their pots are also generic. Parang Deeco rin.

Thanks, anyway.

.

alexan has a brand called Bourns Trimmers and Potentiometers w/c is still in their official product list.
Try to Ask them again but I'd still prefer to get parts from them than Deeco. They have better Quality when it comes to parts. They have branches in timog and megamall as per their website try to confirm this and pay them a visit.

My old fones were stolen so the numbers you were calling are no longer in existence. I'll PM you my new numbers. Cheers!

Re: Balarila's Woodworking Attempts

The amp case I was building got twisted a bit as I was waiting for the glue to dry. Bad clamping

The twist was not really that perceptible. And I could make do with it. But, as many a craftsman would say: It just takes a few hours/days to correct a mistake, but it takes forever to live with it.

So went to my old stash of good wood (salvaged from house-demolition dealers) and got a plank of what-they-call "Tiger Molave" and went to work.

Here it is so far (sorry for the grainy early dawn photo):

That's the case for both the body and the transformer. Will be working on it at nights so I hope to finish by end-week.

You may note that the transformer case has four columns with grooves. I intend to fill the four sides with some clear plastic panes. Any idea where I can get small cuts of this plastic?

Re: Balarila's Woodworking Attempts

Slow going. I'm used to building big things. Doing this amp case is so mabusisi pala and parts are small I usually end up doing manual back saw.

Was sanding last night and when I clamped it down on my workbench, applied too much pressure I snapped one member. Had to reglue. Also added some cosmetic stuff:

Hope I can find some clear plastic panes for the transformer box.

Re: Balarila's Woodworking Attempts

Are you referring to Acrylic plastic sheets? You can get them at sign maker shops. They usually have left over cut outs that might fit your need. A word of caution Ding, transformers have certain heat signatures on account of their temperature dissipation. Acrylic plastics easily bend/melt when exposed to heat so verify with the seller the temperature threshold and measure if you can the heat dissipation of your Transformer. I'd go glass on this one 'coz sellers cut your need to size w/o hesitation and it has a high temp threshold plus it comes with a variety of colors too. My two cents.:):goodluck:

Good idea on the glass. Will take your advice.

Salamat!

Re: Balarila's Woodworking Attempts

Since I foresaw I'd be very busy the coming days, worked extra to make this project presentable. Sprayed water-based Deft polyurethane on the case, oiled and waxed the table, oiled the stand. My soldering skills are really bad. Can't remove the old pot with broken shaft so just glued it for now.

SWMBO went out on some errands. So I went and assembled everything in the dining room where she loved to work. When she arrived, I had some nice Noel Cabangon music playing.

Disaster struck.

She saw the whole set-up and I could see revulsion in her face.

As it turns out, she has always wanted that space clear and open. I knew about it but thought the music in that space would change her mind.

Ahhh...well. Sometimes, surprises you contrive turn out surprising you in a bad way.

Took down the whole thing and almost burned them in the garage. Wala lang akong posporo...didn't smoke.

Day after, I guess SWMBO realized how much effort I put into it. I found that she assembled everything but in different places.

She put the sound system in the family room:

She put the table in the living room:

I guess I'll have to be content with that.

Here're some more photos of the still-unfinished amp. Still have to get that pot replaced and put some glass around the torroidal transformer and, pag sinipag, some blue LEDs.

Nakakahiya. Mabagal ang progress. Here's my thread at pinoyboats: http://pinoyboats.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1552

I promise to resume boatwork this weekend.

Re: Balarila's Woodworking Attempts

BTW, that table also came out great on the finish. Tiyagaan lang sa sanding then aging, oil. Also used the Rennaisance Wax I had for sometime now. That wax instantly hardens with a light sheen so no oily finish to wipe off:

Re: Balarila's Woodworking Attempts

IMHO Balarila's woodworking is in a class of it's own. If one observes carefully his wips then it's easy to spot that he does include from time to time a few other subtle shapes thus making his projects look non monotonous.

Thanks, Jay. Ngayon ko lang nabasa comment mo. And I am flattered.

Yes, I try to put some nuances on whatever I do. I don't want a box to be simply a box, or a rack just a series of shelves. There always has to be some romance in whatever we do!
