Good am/pm PHMers,

Saw bamboo planks [flooring material] a few days ago and thought it would be a good tabletop for the island kitchen cabinet i've been meaning to build for the longest time.

Thanks.

Re: Bamboo Tabletop

Hi there sadoygidi,

I don't know the reason or reasons why you chose bamboo as your, shall we say table top for your kitchen island, motif ba ng kitchen mo ay native in look or something provincial ang dating.

Well anyway maybe that is not important anymore, if that is the motif you want in your kitchen or your kitchen island then so be it, siguro motif mo sa kitchen mo ay medyo native somewhat.

Anyway I have here two pics of my dinning Table which I made and designed a couple of years back and the top are bamboo slats na natyaga ring mailagay. In one pic a bench with similar design was included to compliment the bamboo table top. My purpose in posting these 2 photos is simply to tickle your imagination on the design you may desire.

This one I never got to finish, no wood stains and finishing varnish pa, kasi ginamit na ni commander, LOL

This pic shows one of the benches with similar design, with regards to the benches, ayun natapos ko rin, complete with wood stain and varnish plus some abaca ropes on the legs which of course cannot be seen. :p he he he he he , kita rin pala from the top.

Well I guess with this post nabigyan ka ng inspiration na ok din pala na gamitin ang bamboo design and its possible for your project, may it be hand made table top or the machine processed table top design. GOOD LUCK on your project and choice of table top. 😀

Re: Bamboo Tabletop

Salamat Rosy, appreciate the advice and inspiration.

Hindi naman motif ng kusina namin ang native, nagandahan lang ako sa baboo tiles na nakita ko.

something like this...

Question, malakas makapurol ng saw [power or hand] ang kawayan di ba? Experience ko ito sa paggawa ng mga kulungan ng manok ng tatay ko more than 30yrs ago 🙂

Salamat ulit.

Re: Bamboo Tabletop

Hey bro,

I guess you are right there too, naka kapurol din ng talim ng lagari ang kawayan, but hey that's how it is, you just have to deal and accept it.

Hey bro, I have a tip for you if ever you cross cut a bamboo slat, you can use an angle grinder, the 4" size or type, attach there a small cutting disk for wood that can be purchased at DIY shops, brand is LOTUS.
It cuts so neat and so fast compared to hand saws ( lagare ng karpentero ) that produces splinters. That is what I used in my last bamboo project cause I got tired of using a hand saw, always leaving some, well I don't know how it is called ( splinters I guess or something? ). Just wear gloves and some eye protection just to be safe. Try it and you'll be surprised with the result, its just like you are using a mini circular saw.

Now with regards to the bamboo tiles you posted, they are beautiful and nice for your table top but you have to protect them well from moisture or water spills. If ever you decide on using it make sure you apply several coats of varnish or you can apply BLO after which maybe if I were you I would put a 1/2" glass on top para ang glass na lang ang nababasa and the bamboo tile surface will always be intack and well preserved.

AM glad that you were inspired, Bro enjoy making your project and hope it turns out well.

Re: Bamboo Tabletop

Hey Armand, bro,

Bro, hindi ko naman sinabing wala akong alam sa basics ng wood working e, he he he he , the only thing is,still my carpentry tools are still very limited specially the power tools, yes I have several hand tools but only the basics, e sa power tools, I only have a finishing sander, belt sander, electric planer, a spiral saw and a skil circular saw, kaya marami pang kulang, so that is why as of now since I'm not yet into wood working, bili lang muna ng WW power tools. E busy pa naman ako sa metal working projects kasi, but in time makakapag wood working din ako, I still have to do some facelifts on our kitchen drawers and cabinet doors and many more WW projects in line. By the way thanks for the encouragement, it is well appreciated.

CHEERS AND HAVE A FINE DAY BRO.

Re: Bamboo Tabletop

What joinery did you use for this table?

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.
