Re: bandsaw box

Hi sir ben,

I was reading your post for balarila regarding this bandsaw box and got my curiosity tickled by googling it and was kinda inspired by the youtube videos by Stevimarin and others. Ang dami rin pala possibilities that can be done with a bandsaw. Ask ko lang, is it possible for these bandsaw boxes be done on a scroll saw machine. Those mini boxes are so cute and can be used as gifts or be sold at knick nack stores. he he he he :p

Hala sir ben, may kasalanan ka sa akin pag bigla akong napabili ng bandsaw or scrollsaw, ikaw ang pasimuno nito, he he he he , you just tickled my curiosity and kept me thinking about the bandsaw boxes. Anyway I'll be watching again the bandsaw box videos on youtube to be more inspired after I post this reply. 😎

Thanks and God bless

Re: bandsaw box

Ako rin tickled na!

How long does it take to build a box? If mabilis lang, short lang ang suffering. Here's the scenario:

I buy a bandsaw. SWMBO gives me hard time for unplanned expense. I build her a beautiful box. She adores it and forgives me and we live happily ever after.

Only risk is she might think it's a jewelry box and demands for the contents!

Re: bandsaw box

ok nahilo ako ehehheh ill answer the questions in succession

1.) Telecaster, the bandsaw is Torq 12" - price, 20K

2.) Rosy, yeah Steve Marin is awesome, i swear he is clinically bi-polar which also lends to his genius in woodworing. I got the idea of the bandsaw box from his you tube. Ok, for this size bandsaw box, a scroll saw is IMPOSSIBLE to work with. The limiting factor for a scroll saw is the thickness, you would not want to put anything thicker than 1.5" on a scroll saw (trust me, i tried!!!!)

3.) Balarila a.k.a. Grammar (hehhehe trip ko lang) the box, all those cutting is pretty quick, i know i said 30 - 45 minutes, but actually its 15 - 30 minutes now that i re-analyzed it.

So all cuts are done in 30 minutes or less for that size box. Now what makes or break your time schedule is the finishing. I will post in awhile the round overs i did on all the edges BY HAND, kasi some parts were so thin that i cant run a round over bit on the router table.

All that sanding took me 1.5 hours, hand sand... HAND SAND... nakakangawit

I have not sanded the innards yet!!! so i think its going to be another .. ummm 1.5 hours, coz i suspect the innards can only be hand sanded.

I hope that answers you question on time duration.

Re: bandsaw box

rounding over the edges were necessary to give it a more 3 dimensional look.

Also on those corners of the crevice, you have no way of having a round over or chamfer bit reaching it, hence by hand was the best method,

I tried using a dremel, but the edges looked artificial and took just as much time as two hands with 80 grit sandpaper

in the middle compartment there is a nick at the bottom that does not look bad, it was a part that was so thin that it went through the bearing of my round over bit on the RT , and hence carved a ... cute lookung "U" hole. I round overed the edge of the u-hole too by hand heheheh

Re: bandsaw box

I was counting the cost

coz i planned on making this available for sale. I mentioned to moji before that the piece would only take 4 hours. I was greatly mistaken. Alot of handsanding to produce a quality finish ( and i cant produce anything less)

for me, it would pain me to sell it for 1,000. Would be content on 1,500 and would be happy, but still feel it deserves it at 2,000 pesos. Anything beyond 2K would be exhorbitant.

I like the soft touch of the round overs, now i need to decide on the stain... or no stain?

there is this tendency to overvalue what we make especially woodworks.

Re: bandsaw box

^^ You might just as well do a "blind" test with some people and ask them on how much would they buy such a thing. Even you yourself, may evaluate if you would buy one for 2K.

But again, until we see the final and finished product we won't know how it would cost "visually".

Re: bandsaw box

most of the things i made in the past ended up being given away for free..hehe

if i had thought of selling them in the first place...consider first my time spent in their making ..and that makes them priceless.

and btw...to make those beautiful bandsaw boxes needed an expensive woodworking chunk of metal and i.e. the bandsaw.

plus the sandpaper, woodstain by minwax, poly by ace or zar, thinner, paint brush, electricity, transpo for buying wood, etc etc..

so many overhead expenses.

from a buyer's point of view without a hint of how it was made...my good guess is 200 bucks.

😮

Re: bandsaw box

P200 for the bandsaw box? sobra naman un doc, that is way undervalued even for a non woodworkers perspective..I've seen plain boxes used to store watches in department stores that look cheap go for around P600 to P1000. It all depends on which market you are targeting.

@ Ben

What wood are you using btw?

Re: bandsaw box

when i visited Roxas city one summer last year, i came to see some woodworkers entrepreneurs on the sidewalks near the busy market hub selling their masterful pieces of unfinished solid mahogany (or gmelina) 6 seater dinner tables with rounded ends and routered edges with a single heavy turned post with bandsawed legs...guess the price?

its a steal at just 3,500 bucks!

free delivery pa!

if i had made one of those..id probably sell mine for maybe 10 grand.

fair?

Re: bandsaw box

maybe you can justify the cost by spending some good materials for packaging...

btw how's the final dimension of the box ben?

i am just as excited to see the finished pic of this box!

Re: bandsaw box

how about the solid six to eight seater kamagong ding table at MOA? sells for 57K. if you look at it seems like a steal, but if you know your craft, you know that the wood is very young and will warp and crack in time. Quality of work is ok, but not the quality we strive for. though the wood alone should cost a pretty penny, its not worth it.
Pricing is a topic that is very vast and very intricate that common people almost often get it wrong. and since we more or less know what they are worth we tend to over-price... but really, it depends on lots of things. how about this... Walnut Log big bucks
