Re: Bed Frame WIP

I will use twin tenons for my end rails. Its 3/4"x 7 1/2" . I will just carve one of the 2x4 legs for the mortise before laminating them.

Question:

My rail is 3/4 x 7 1/2 x 5 feet. How wide should my tenon be? Is there a minimum for the shoulder? The cheek should be around 2-2.5 inches.

he will Moji, but will m&t the front and back portion, the rails will be used sa sides na lang daw... does make a better frame I think too.

Jun, you can cut the cheeks a little less than 1/3 the width of the stock, at least you would have more stock on the tenon. I do suggest you cut the cheeks all the way around though...

So does that mean the bed can't be disassembled?

it can be, but for the side rails only the front and back are assemblies.

You mean so I can have a shoulder on all four sides?

For those into bed frame WIPS, might have some good ideas here:

Re: Bed Frame WIP

Started doing the tenons.

Using a straight router bit.

I had a 2mm tearout on the top tenon, thus has to make it narrower. I will have to adjust the mortise. I will be doing the mortise with real time measurements.

I will clean up the tenon using chisels and sandpapers.

you can avoid those tear outs brader... you can use a scrap iece at the end or you can back rout. If you want to learn more, seminar ka sa kin pag free ka... jolibee lang masaya na... sa iyo ko lang offer yan ha... 😀

Re: Bed Frame WIP

A quickie DIY sub base, makes handling the router easier.

Did the mortise, a cheat method for now. Traced the tenon on the wood, then routed and chiseled and planed and hammered and cursed until it went in. 🙂

Dry fit

Re: Bed Frame WIP

Gluing the legs.

Joints are snug, but not perfect, some voids in the joint and glue lines. Even with the voids, the 5-inch wide tenon should still be strong enough, will just need to fill the visible vois for aesthetic purposes.

At this rate of progress, I may be finish by December. 😀

Seriously, a lot have been learned in this, the other half of the pair should come out sooner, hopefully.

Re: Bed Frame WIP

I would never treat that as a cheat. If only all mortises could be traced like that I bet most would do it as it promises a better fit. Only purists will push the idea to do it the old way coz tracing would be cheating. I would never sacrifice actual measurement versus a computed one. Why do it the harder way when an easier one is available right at hand.

I would say that what you did is a wiser method in your case.
