Re: Best stain and finish for this hardwood

Bro you can use the ZAR brand of wood stains or BOYSEN wood stain brand, these are good brands and will bring out the best in your wood, pili ka na lang ng personal choice mo of color for your wood stain.

I've used the ZAR brand for my kitchen door and it came out excellently.

Maybe you can still wait for some more members to chime in specially the ones expert in wood finishing like Timber, Violaine, and many others. Oh there's Armand too.

That wood is dao? No way would i touch stain on that kind of wood. I suggest either shellac or boiled linseed oil. That wood has grain that is beautiful, it would be a shame to hide it in stain.

Btw, where were you able to source your Dao if you dont mind me asking?

Re: Best stain and finish for this hardwood

I'm province based i was able to buy practically the whole tree.
After sanding I find the wood pale beside the very nice black grain.
Can I use shellac or boiled linseed oil for external/main door?
Wow 2nd post palang Ived learned something already.

Re: Best stain and finish for this hardwood

You will probably need to seal it with polyurethane if its a main door. Your lucky, those wood are difficult to come by here in manila. Did you season the wood before you used it?

Re: Best stain and finish for this hardwood

It is expected for the wood to look pale after sanding as the grain were dried. Using BLO will "pop" those grains back, try it with a scrap piece.

Re: Best stain and finish for this hardwood

Lucky lucky you bro that you were able to purchase almost all that tree and that kind of wood " DAO ' is hard to find here and if ever there are available pa.

Actually I can already see the very nice grains of the wood on the door jambs, what more if it has been stained or varnished, congrats bro, great purchase.

Re: Best stain and finish for this hardwood

gorgeous wood :dance1:... definitely try to keep it as natural as you can.:secret:
Now before I give you some of my finishing schedules if I were to do that, How dry is the wood? a cheap (well not so cheap really) moisture meter (available at Panda for less than 1k) can give you what you need to know. Kasi air drying 1" wood for a year will give you proper dryness, anything more than an inch and you will need to dry some more otherwise it will move. and if it does move, hard finishes will look terrible(you can use oil instead like Sadolin hardwood oil natural lang).

now if I were to finish that, I would start with a coat of shellac (blonde) then a coat of blo then sand before it dries:shocked2: Yes, you read right. sanding before the blo dries (it prevents the sandpaper from corning and you fill the voids and get a smooth surface, all at the same time).
then apply shellac again, then either rub away or apply another topcoat of your choice.
If you see abusing this door, use poly......:balloon:

Re: Best stain and finish for this hardwood

@okidok,

you are lucky i am not a DENR personnel coz i would confiscate all your DAO and keep it as my own stash! Eeeeeeeeeee!

in my elementary years, Dao was the name of my boy scout troop..and i was their troop leader.. i remember making a white cloth flag and drew a nice tree...and this hangs out at the tent's entrance.

i didnt know that sometime later i will appreciate the beauty of this wood and that is Dao.

i will be happy to touch its unfinished glory.

can you bring a small piece when you have time to attend our eb's for me?

thanks in advance.

Re: Best stain and finish for this hardwood

@timber715
The wood was air dried in these sizes 2x8x16' and 6x6x16'. The tree was cut march of 2010.
Maybe I'll just bring a piece if you can spare your time and moisture meter when Im in Manila. Hehehe and prolly talk about how to do finish this wood.
@violiane
Fortunately the owner was able to get a permit. It took him 6 months to process.
Sure, I will bring a piece for you. Do we have a date for our next eb already?

Re: Best stain and finish for this hardwood

Used Mahogany waterbased color protector, a bit shiny.

Dito naman I used Teak thinnerbased color protector, a bit shiny.

Used Teak thinnerbased Oil light color.

Used Teak thinnerbased oil also but more darker color.

Wood is all Pine trees.

Re: Best stain and finish for this hardwood

I would like to echo Timber's comment re seasoning. I've done some cabinets in the past with not-so-dry wood. The planks moved after a few years and it was just ugly.

Willy Fernando (also in this forum) offers controlled kiln-drying services to forum members. You may want to seek his help.
