I have a table saw and a router table.
I currently am planning to build some cases and boxes for my tools. I don't have much woodworking experience / practice and would love to hear from you guys how you learned and developed your box joinery techniques & jigs building. For now I can do Kreg butt joints and miter 45 joints as well as one using a drawer lock bit.
I am now looking at finger joints, dovetails and the like making do with what tools I have for now.
Any suggestions, links, materials would be helpful as I want to spend less time in researching and put more on the actual hands on practice.
This is the box I just made for my Gear Puller Set.
Looking forward for better than miter 45 joints next time.
Hoping to hear from our masters too.
Thanks a lot. Jay

Re: Box Making Joinery
the trick to tighter miters is an accurate miter saw. I suggest you start using your drawer lock bits, they should be easy to use once you set it up properly... then glue and clamp na lang... at least in this scenario, you don't need additional tools or jigs...

Timb, turo mo yung box joint jig mo for the table saw..para magamit ni Jay yung TS niya..

I would but Jay still doesn't have a Dado blade... but there is another option. hmmm, if I find time I will make a sample bukas... if I remember...:p

Re: Box Making Joinery

Ah oo nga pala..well may rt din naman si jay. Glad to know he has time for woodworking na.
Re: Box Making Joinery
yup he has, but since he too has a drawer lock bit, it would be much easier to make drawers with them...

Re: Box Making Joinery
The drawer lock bit is a good tool. I made a few drawers before using it. The thing is its just a pain to setup. I think I'll have to make some kind of setup block for good repeatability.

Looks like I am under equipped for good joinery. The Freud dado blade looks real attractive and maybe a Lock Miter 45 bit as well.
The Katana Lock Miter 45 bit seems to be reasonably priced.

What do you guys think about the Katana #17850 Lock Miter Bit?

Re: Box Making Joinery
Sir Jay, I'm not sure how the lock miter joint will absorb the abuse when used for tool cabinets which are heavy and sometimes could have loose items. I just find the tongue portions to be too thin as compared with the box joint tongue.
I think your setup problems would be lesser once you created a setup block.
Re: Box Making Joinery
the best i think for practical purpose and strong joinery in your case bro is the dado joint.
the lock miter and the drawer lock joints are meant to increase the glue joint surfaces but still no match with the dado joints for drawer carcase to hold heavy garage tools.
further, to display the beauty of the two expensive bits above is to make use of light and dark colored solid woods..
and of course, solid wood joineries entail exacting dimensions to achieve the best results.
in which case you will need a thicknesser.ahehehe
so many tools to buy and so little money...
and so little time.
btw will the pocket hole joinery be wanting for your drawer building?

Re: Box Making Joinery
your drawer lock bits are more than enough for your needs Jay, if you want to add strength to the boxes, I suggest you add splines na lang. simple as well on the ts...
unless of course you are looking to tool up, sell me your drawer lock bit and get the MLCS... 😀

Re: Box Making Joinery
I think you're right Timb. I'll spend more time on the drawer lock bit to really get full use out of it.
Just like V said too many tools needed and so little budget and time to spend .....

@Timb
The Dado Blade is currently sitting with the Diablo 1050x in my cart.
Do you think that if I get this then I'm good for finger jointing already even in plywood only?
@V
Any feedback yet your side about your dado blade?
