Mga bro, i'll be acquiring a used narra bed. It was used for a few years, kaya may mga wear and tear na sa original finishing nya dun sa mga part na madalas subjected to contact. Ayaw ko sana totally stripping the old finish and then refinish it, since hindi naman grabe ang sira sa finish nya, at medyo major work na yon..hehe. I also don't know kung ano ginamit sa finish kung shellac or varnish, etc.

Ano po magandang gamitin para linisin ito at maibalik ang dati nyang kintab? Thanks

Re: Cleaning, restoring or refinishing of narra furnitures

I used to watch thewoodwhisperer.com wherein the main man himself started from a refinishing company. I've learned that it is still best to know what type of finish was used. Otherwise, they try to refinish a small hidden part of the item in order to check if the items they will be using will suit.

Maybe you could try testing a small part on the side table and check what would work.

not to scare you or anything but refinishing is really a much more demanding job than painting of finishing... it demands a lot of knowledge and skill to pull one off successfully... or just very lucky :p

Re: Cleaning, restoring or refinishing of narra furnitures

Just a few tips before you undertake re-finishing...

1. Know the previous finish base of your furniture, ex. Lacquer etc.
2. Check if they have been applied with some sort of Furniture conditioner like Pledge, Wipe out cream, Old English oil or Bees Wax. If so you may no longer be able to re-topcoat the furniture as these conditioning agents usually seep through the film and emit residue for a long time. They cause the new topcoat film to crease or wrinkle on contact.
3. A lot of savings would be achieved if someone pro can do it for you. For the size of your furniture and the price you got you need a sweet ending for it. If you don't have sufficient knowledge in finishing you just might end in a sour note if you don't have practice sessions or test runs. By itself that would mean expense just to test your skills.
4. As I mentioned, Practice, practice, practice till you are confident enough to tackle your desired project.
5. If you get the chance to see some PRO-Finisher in action, take notes and get some tips.

Re: Cleaning, restoring or refinishing of narra furnitures

Thanks sir Timbs & Willy! Yes, i decided to leave the finishing as it is, since it doesn't look that bad. And also my skill doesn't extend that far in terms of dealing with this project, i might end up ruining it..hehe.

BTW i have an OT question: How do you identify if a furniture is actually made of Narra instead of Tanguile, Mahogany or Gmelina? They seem to look the same with the finished product.

Wood grain would be a good indication, also color/shade of the wood, assuming only clear finish is applied.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.
