good thing to start year 2011 with a project, a craftman's style coffee table, or should we say center table. having a height of 17 3/4", length of 46" and a depth of 22" exactly. i decided this to build this project in replacement to our age old small center table, i inherited from my mother. and also to test my skills. i guess it's time to make some serious project, because most of the time are always devoted on making jigs, fixtures, storages, workbenches etc. actually i have started this project a few weeks ago, and although already finished, it still needs some final touches like rubbing off the finishes, have to wait for a week or two for the topcoat to fully cure before going to the rub off.
i choose craftsman style because of it's simplicity in style( style lang ha, oak is the preferred wood), straight line ( hope it is straight ) sturdy and very straightforward in construction and many things, i am fond of the arts and craft style in woodworking and of furniture making. and i am hoping to do projects, i mean most of my projects inspired by this design... and because our house lacking this important furniture , i guess it's the right time to begin a project regarding this craft.
along the phase of the project, i have learned many important lessons, like choosing the lumber, i bought the lumber at wilcon balintawak, thought the lumber is good as long as it is straight, hind pala, very many aspect we have to know and learned in choosing the right wood. the wood is called NEPO, by the salesman, imported daw from malaysia, very light and very soft, but very brittle, but instead of using it as a firewood, i still continue with the project...hope you enjoy scrolling with my project of mine.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
this the lumber, i acclimatized it first for 3 days( i guess it's fine). should have bought nalang pala a "tanguile" wood.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
cut and glued the pieces for the legs, shelf, slats and the table top.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
making mortises to the legs and end rails to recieve the slats, and tenons to the rails and slats.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
tenons for the slats
Re: craftman style coffee table.
test the fit.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
How brittle is the wood? Wood it be safe to use as a center table?
Re: craftman style coffee table.
not perfect fit as it should be, i still continue with the project. dis-assemble the pieces and sand each workpieces, started with grit 100, 150, and finished it at 220.
small pierces by hand.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
after sanding smooth the pieces, i apply a single coat of BLO to the workpieces, experimenting first on scrap wood before starting on my finishing works...i coat first with BLO, to add depth to color of stain i will be using. don't forget to isolate the tenon parts, i used masking tape, so as not to affect the strenght of the glue by the oil finishes.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
after the BLO has dried, actually it takes days or up to weeks before the BLO dries,i make it about a day or so, since i'll be using oil base stain, before i apply the stain.
stir the stain very well first
flooded the wokpieces with stain( brush on)
then wipe off all the excess.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
end results after wiping off.

comparing it to the other wood like our tanguile, it's way out of comparison, nabigla lang siguro ako sa pagpili, nabighani kasi ako sa color and grain pattern. dami pa talagang dapat malaman on how to choose a wood...
about the safety, seems fine maybe, since it won't be accepting some heavy load like sitting on it.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
time out na muna, some intermission, pics of the masters craftsman caught in action TIMBER 715 ( not me ha) ,ang pasimuno ng lahat... behind is workbench, and docV, looking on.EB's at our last x-mas get together.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
baka ma mis-interpret,caught in action is timber 715, behind timber is workbench, at the front is docV.
Re: craftman style coffee table.
i could be duped as well to see what you got at wilcon...ok lang yan bro as your prototype and could be your display for commissioned piece later on when you can select the best wood for the project.
thanks for the pics..you are getting nice documentation of the works btw as the days go by...baka next time me pina publish ka na book on woodworking projects locally...make sure Timber makes the introductory..hehe
cheers!
