Desk Build

Found a large slab of dao lying in a warehouse for 8 years. Probably overpaid for it. It was two inches thick, bowed and split. But scraping to see the grain, knew I had to have it for a desk I'd been meaning to build for my study.

Here're the legs.

The wood is not cheap and not enough so had to cheat on the legs by making some veneers on the bandsaw.

After chamfering, the edges of the veneer are invisible!

Re: Desk Build

But, I'm gettnig ahead of myself. In preparing the legds: Measuring and remeasuring.

As they say, measure thrice, cut once.

The scary routing for the mortises.

Some oops.

Looks good so far.

Re: Desk Build

But dao is, by far, the toughest wood I'd worked with. It's not too hard but the beauty of its grain is also the cause of a lot of tearout when planing. I'd resharpened my iron already.

Also had to make do with some pieces that had splits. Put them in the least visible part but still have to find a good way of filing.

Any advice on how to fill those tearouts? Tried Elmers putty but it stood out too white. Thinking about mixing some wood flour with elmers glue. I plan to finish this in either oil or shellac so I'd prefer some filling that would not show using these finishes. Hopefully a filling that is porous, seeps in oil or shellac. Suggestions?

"timber mate" ( water-base ) wood, grain and edge filler.
available at wilcon...
it takes stain considerably well...
easy to sand also.
just chose the matching color...
good luck ...

Re: Desk Build

@ bala

that grain is gorgeous! but i wonder about the filler: even if you're able to exactly match the color, how will you match the grain? with the long lines of the grain it might be really visible.

btw, i tried the sawdust + glue ( kusot + kola hehe) before, using it to cover finish nails. They stained slightly darker than the surroundings (due to the surface area i presume), but all in all i liked the result. Those tearouts though seem significantly wider than finish nail holes.

Since the layer is quite thick, it might be a good idea to just apply a belt sander to the wood and sand the whole thing down a couple of mm's to get rid of the smaller tearouts. Tip yan ni boss V when i had tearouts in palo china.

Ambangis ni balarila! Veneer na ang tinitira ngayon. At ang ganda ng grain!

I've tried timbermate, pero parang masyado syang makinis. It really stands out against the natural wood. Maybe because I used it on end grain. :dead:

Re: Desk Build

Salamat, guys. Will try out Timbermate (that sounds like a nickname for Sonny's wife!)

Got your warnings re color. Will have to experiment on coloring. Being too makinis may nnot be an issue. I plan to sand this fine then apply shellac or oil so it should be smooth. As for the stripes, I have some jobus. Will try out some "art painting" to simulate the stripes across the filling. In the end, if these don't work, there's always the belt sander!

I already have the top dimensioned but I'm not smooth planing it until my new LN planes arrive. Hopefully, those planes will produce less tear out than my trusty Stanley.

ayun naman pala eh, di pa kasi dumadating ang LN.... shellac Ding with a little pumice powder and a lot of elbow grease can hide the tearout...

Now, that's something new to me. I know pumice (volcanic rock) but didn't know it could be used on woodworking. Can this be bought in powdered form somewhere locally? Or should I find myself a volcano and grind some rocks?:D

Is pumice used to add body to the shellac or for rubbing the wood?

BTW, dropped by Wilcon over lunchbreak and found Timbermate. But they're in quantities much larger than what I need and comes in various colors; each bottle a little less than P500. Will probably try the shellac approach first.

Re: Desk Build

Thanks. Dao really has beautiful grain but tough to work with. I'll have to take it slow and carefuly from hereon.

DocV, since you're in photography, too, so I'm happy you appreciate those subtle image compositions/treatments.

Got it! Googled.

I have some shellac flakes coming but I don't have any pumice powder. Thought I could get by with denat alcohol and some oil. Anybody know of a local source? Has anyone tried the dental pumice powder that Jonathan mentioned sometime back?
