Re: Desk Build

Salamat, Jonathan, also for your PM.

Actually saw some dental suppliers at Sulit and texted one. They sell them, however, in shades of pink or green (strawberry, cherry, and mint flavor's!). I'll need to find some in off white or tan. Will do some hunting.

@Ding

There is a dental supply store called "SRD" in the Bayan area near the Marikina Sports complex. My wife gets her supplies from that store. Maybe they have what you are looking for. Here's the address.... Old-#264, New-#302 E. Dela Paz St. Sto. Nino, Marikina City Tel.- 9483274

Re: Desk Build

Started assembling the desk (rails, stretcher, etc). Now a bit of kaartihan: corbels.

Cut these using the table saw and the bandsaw.

Made a sled for routing the curve. Used some double sided tape to fix the corbel on the sled. One thing about this tape, it does not stick well enough when you want it and sticks too good when you don't. Had some mishaps when the material slipped off the sled as you can see from some gouges.

Ah, well. Just sanded them off. Some curves ended up more concave than others. But, since the cobels will be attachde on different legs. no one can visually tell they're not exactly identical. Shhh... don't telll anyone.

Then, drilled holes for dowels.

Now, one big boo-boo is that I have a set of dowel centers I got from Timber. Never used them before. Mistakenly thought they were caps you put on dowels so you can then use it to mark the center of the hole for the dowel. Already glued the dowels on the corbels before I opened the pack of dowel centers and was surprised they were actual "male"!

So, had to use the old fashioned pencil-outlining technique.

Glued:

He-he. Haven't even touched the last batch of kamagong. Reserving that for our dining table.

actually have a nice Malabayabas desk but it has no drawers so that's enough justification to build a new one!

Note, however, that I am building this desk in a tight corner near the rear of my boat-in-progress. That way, it's hidden from SWMBO. Hopefully, when she sees the finished product, she won't give me a hard time.

Re: Desk Build

Slow progress. That's the downside of a top-secret project. Here it is, dry-fitting the drawers. And that top is just nakapatong.

Note that it is hidden under and behind some junk. Shhhh....

Will try to post how drawers were done later.

Re: Desk Build

I usually use sanding dust from the same wood and glue, or shellac. Sometimes I just sand down some darker or lighter wood just to get the dust to mix with the glue.

Re: Desk Build

Since I needed to clear some space for my incoming jointer, had to force myself to finish this deks. Well...almost.

Sanded. Finished the drawers. Here it is:

Next week, will paint with polyurethane. Also, will attach the drawer handles.
