Re: Desk Build

Here are some photos on the innards.

Note that the drawer system is actually framed so I can just slide it into the slot and make adjustment when screwing the frame in.

The back of the frame is "kregged" in.

The face and back of the drawer is dovetailed for strength.

The top is attached with screws through this flat bracket, available at many of the mall hardware stores.

Re: Desk Build

This piece of plywood acts as stopper for sliding in the drawer and also to prevent the drawer from being pulled out completely.

I think I will transfer those stoppers to the bottom of the backside of the drawer (instead of the top where it is now) so I can access it from underneath. There will be no need to remove the top whenever I need to pull out the drawer.

Re: Desk Build

Wasn't too happy with the top. It came out smudgy after applying some oil. So I got my trusty Ozito Belt Sander with some 60-grit paper and sanded away. Then used my Bosch random orbital and sanded with 120 and 220 grits.

Came out nice but, while applying sanding sealer, some areas just kept sucking the sanding sealer in. Here is how it looks like after the sealer has dried.

This dao came from old leftover stock which included (I think) part of the root system already. That part that looks matte is probably the root which kept sucking in the sealer. It also gave me a lot of problems while sanding and planing as it would often chip off. Almost like coco-lumber. I hope the sealer will make it tougher. I will sand later and see how it looks.

Anybody has any recommendations? Do I keep sanding and sealing until everything comes out even? I plan to top it with satin poly.

Re: Desk Build

After one more sealing, the top came out ok. Sprayed semi-gloss polyurethane.

Finally finished and brought up to my loft workarea.

Changed the stop to the classic swivelling piece of wood at the rear, as recommended by BF.

He-he. Pangit ng bushed enamel inside the drawer. Had to sand and repaint that.

Sonny also recommended not to screw the top at all four corners as the wood wood may expand and rip the top. Good suggestion. So I grindered the front brackets so that the screwholes became slots. That should be sufficient to allow for movement.

Re: Desk Build

Below is the photo of my old desk made of Malabayabas, an extremely tough and heavy wood. That top slab required four strong men to carry up the ladder. I now do not know yet how I'll bring it down.

Note that the top is ripped on opposite corners. That's because the table maker tenoned the legs into the tabletop. I guess the legs were not thoroughly dry yet so, when it moved, it tore the top.

Will mill this wood (if I can) for use on some structural parts of my boat and other projects.

Re: Desk Build

sir, ganda po ng new desk. Much better quality and beauty sa mga nakikita ko na supermahal na binebenta sa malls. This one I think will last, if not forever, I believe through many, many generations. And this is what is so special with woodworking, we leave a physical memory of a thing that is beautiful.

Salamat, Botyok.

Yes, whenever I build something, I make sure it will be a legacy, something my great grandchild would say, my old mans' Pop did that.

Re: Desk Build

Final post.

It's great pleasure to use something one built and worked out well. There were lots of errors on this project but, in the balance of things, I'm very happy with it. Whenever I work on my desk, I occasionally run my hand through the wood and ogle the grain. Joy!
