Hello
newbie here. i wanted to make a coffee table, i already have the top. im thinking of using wooden legs that looks like an animal leg (shape like antique ball and claw legs). im hoping it would be sturdy and wouldnt move to much because i ll be putting a glass on top. is this an ambitious project for a first time build?
or should i stick with metal legs? if so, where can i find legs that are ready to bolt on my top?

thanks much!

Re: DIY Table legs

It would be good if you can introduce yourself to us, first, Maravishnu. You may do that in the "Member Introductions" thread.

On the animal leg, that looks like a woodcarving project to me. Depending on how skilled you are, it could be challenging. It would be best if you can show us a sketch, let us know what tools you have, and describe your experience/skill.

Re: DIY Table legs

pangit naman tingan pag period furniture me glass top.

tapered legs ka na lang bro..or the easiest, punta ka ng Wilcon..find turned table legs and join them using mortise and tenon.

but what brader Balarila said, introduce yourself first..medyo ambitious nga kung ball and claw foot ang project mo and for someone else pa..i saw how its done but my skill and tools hasnt gone beyond that far..

Re: DIY Table legs

thanks sirs! will check that section. mejo hirap ako mag navigate, hndi ko makita yun forum layout from the home page. i have to click on todays post or do a search to get here in woodworking

actually its a modern design. i just like the curves of the animal leg. not the details.. i think parang s shape na hinatak, yun hind leg ng lion etc. kaya ko nabanggit yun ball and claw kase parang ganon yun shape nya. pero meron kase kami side table same shape pero walang details, parang legs ng doe/deer naman hehe.

i ll try to do a sketch, my experience? nil. i got power drill, sander, jigsaw, puro hand tools lang. most of my DIY are in electronics, guitars, amps etc. i made longboard last year and used biax cloth fiberglass and that was my latest diy. woodworking? i can saw, drilll, screw on wood. sorry. should i leave this to the experts?

Re: DIY Table legs

thanks for the wilcon suggestion too. i ll check on that. sa ibang bansa kase may ikea where you can buy legs and just screw it on. id actually prefer that since this project is a gift and i cant gamble on the sturdiness. okay lang kung ako sana gagamit, i can experiment it. i hope this will be foolproof. but if it can be done in a classy diy way, why not?

actually i went to soler today to check on the metal alternative. i thought of having this fabricated

if mashadong ambitious yun wooden legs.

i think my main concern is reinforcing and sturdiness, without sacrificing the simple design of the legs.
suggestion kase ng mom ko, baluster type na lang na dugtong yun mga base ng legs, ganon kase yun coffee table sa sala for 20++ years at di talaga gumagalaw. kaya lang ang bulky mashado ng itsura. gusto ko sana na emphasize yun top ko, parang lumulutang, hindi mashado agaw attention yun legs, pero at the same time hindi naman mukhang straight legs lang.

ganito sana yun design ko in mind...
eto in metal pero ganyan sana yun shape

eto in wood, okay din
?w=495&h=371

yun ganito kasimple, okay nadin

gusto ko sana outward buka nung legs, kase mas malaki yun glass na ilalagay ko

Thanks!

Re: DIY Table legs

Season 3 episode 4 of the Woodsmith Shop shows how to build tables using store-bought legs.

You can download the plans here:

Just in case you have trouble finding the specific file, here's the direct link:

You're not welcome. And I won't accept your "thank you".

What I'll accept are pictures of your table. 😉
Please keep us posted on your project's progress. :p
