Galing!

What wood is that? WHat did you use for hinges? How did you waterproof?

Re: Ernie's Gift for Prefered client

nope, sa house ng Contractor nyan, nag lambing lang yung may ari ng construction company na papalitan nya gate nya and i want to give it to her as a gift. eh syempre GO na agad. aside from being able to work with wood ( yun ang main reason) i made the couple happy pa, now they are are ninong and ninang. a very sweet mid 60's humble couple thats been my client since 6 years ago.

ding, wood used was im sure Ipil for the redish ones and Teak wood for the yellowish ones.

ahhhh.. the waterproofing?? thats why im going to attend to your seminar this saturday. so that i can seal it properly next week. ahh, and the hinges, its typical way of installing a steel framed gate, sorry, didnt include that there is a steel frame to support everything.

client asked his workers to drop off a new set of steell frame sa house so i can work on it. ibang level naman kasi yung steel works, not my expertise ang welding welding. i know how to but i prefer not to.

WOW, GANDA TALAGA NG WOOD COMBINATION, I never thought or imagined that IPIL-ipil wood /lumber can be used for such project specially when exposed to the elements.

I have plenty of giant IPIL-ipil trees here in my property and would just use it as source of firewood when strong typhoons would topple them down. I guess I should start re planting again new seedling around the area together with the Mahogany seedlings.

spray or brush it with Spar urethane from Ace Ernie, it should protect it from the elements....

Re: Ernie's Gift for Prefered client

@Ernie
My question on hinges is also about waterproofing. A lot of times, waterproofing is applied on wood but the holes left on metal fasteners are left unprotected. You then end up with wood rotting near the fasteners. What's worse, because the wood is sealed in with the waterproofing layer, the water that seeps into the holes get trapped inside.

In epoxy work, it is common to drill a hole larger than the the fastener, say a screw, then fill up that hole with epoxy putty. When epoxy is dry, the screw is then screwed onto the epoxy "bushing".

@Rosy
Someone told me that Ipil is different from the common Ipil-Ipil that is used for firewood. Not sure but I thought you may want to check this first before you go chopping away your Ipil-ipil trees for woodworking!

So a bolt-through approach would be better than a half screwed-in on this scenario then, am I right Ding?

Re: Ernie's Gift for Prefered client

the frame ding for the gate used was 1 x 2 tubular, screws was used to fasten the wood to the tubular frame... thats a good idea ah.. fill the hole with epoxy level to the wood itself.. hmmm.. thanks ding

and Rosy, iba yung Ipil (hardwood, dense grain, redish in color) as opposed to ipil-ipil which if i remember right is light colored and sometime, eto baka chismis na to, fed to pigs

Re: Ernie's Gift for Prefered client

Is that the real Ipil? Very nice wood, also hard to find nowadays. It is indeed very different from ipil-ipil. Good job on the gate too!

Re: Ernie's Gift for Prefered client

thanks, boss JayL, di pa ako nakaka daan ahh, last sunday sana may childrens party kami ni wife sa makati, kaso di ako makatakas to pass by ur place, plus its a sunday and unannounced baka din storbo.monday naman is chinese new year and though its a holiday may mga client na kailangan ikutan. anywaysss.. SSSSSOOOONNNN boss, SSSooooonnn.

Moji, yes sir, its the real deal IPIL. 1st time i got the chance to work with it was when someone from the 2nd hand store near fairview (closed na cause madaya) sold me a tablon, never buy a tablon, when i had it cut to pieces i need half of it, the inside parts where bulok and syempre, tapon. ended up paying gold pala per board ft considering the amount of wood pieces i got. it was from a 10x10x8 and usable parts i got from it where all 2 x 2's and not a lot at that, 12 pices lang yata or less.. anyways, i used it for my 1st alone project, a dining table for me and EX girlfriend ko. when you sand it down even without sealers maganda na sya, imagie what happened when i added sealers na to the project

Yes that wood is impressive, the house of my previous boss had flooring made out of Ipil and loved the wood ever since i saw it there. Unfortunately i hadn't had the chance to work with it as the usual suppliers dont have it.
