Hello guys,

I would like to propose that we get to open a sort of cheat sheet where anyone could browse and refer to when finishing a project. This documentation will be a great way to make a finishing bible where everything is aims for a single idea on different approaches.

You may include as much painting code or techniques that you use. You may also include the preferred brands that you use as the chemistry is as important as the technique. Please be as specific as you can be.

Let me give a few example from excerpts from two major paint companies as examples:

Metal priming and painting (water based) --Boysen
1) Wipe the surface with rag soaked in paint thinner to remove dust, dirt, grease, oil, wax and other foreign matter.
2) Let it stay for 10-15 minutes.
3) Be sure to wash off surface thoroughly with water, letting it dry before applying paint. Primer should be applied immediately after drying.
4) Apply 1 coat of Boysen Primeguard
5) 2 coats of Boysen Epoxy Enamel (for interior surface only)

Wood/Metal painting (auto lacquer) --Davies
1) Apply one coat of Duco 801 Auto Lacquer Primer Surfacer White by spray and let it dry for 1 hour.
2) Putty surface imperfections with Duco 601 Auto Lacquer Putty White using putty knife.
3) Spot prime puttied areas with Duco 801 Auto Lacquer Primer Surfacer White by spray and let it dry for 1 hour.
4) Finish with two coats of Duco 201 Auto Lacquer Topcoat by spray.

Wood painting (oil based) --Boysen
1) Surface to be painted should be clean and dry, free from dust, dirt and other foreign matter.
2) Hammer all nails deep enough to apply putty.
3) Sand rough wood until smooth, then dust off before painting.
4) Apply a coat of Boysen Flatwall Enamel #800
5) Apply Boysen Plasolux Glazing Putty #311
6) Two coats of Boysen Quick Dry Enamel (any desired color)

Wood staining --Boysen
1) Sand surface until wood is smooth to the touch and no slivers or rough edges remain.
2) Hammer all nails deep enough to apply putty.
3) Dust off surfaces completely then wipe with a clean rag.
4) Apply Boysen Oil Wood Stain (any desired color)
5) Two coats of Boysen Lacquer Sanding Sealer #1254
6) two coats of Boysen Clear Gloss Lacquer #1250

Penetrating Oil Finish --violane [COLOR="Blue"]LINK
Mixture (2:2:1 ratio)
2 parts Polyurethane varnish (clear or satin)
2 parts Mineral spirits (paint thinner)
1 part boiled linseed oil (kung wala, pede din yung Sadolin deep penetrating oil)

1) Material should be sanded smooth.
2) You may need to apply pore filler ( I use PYE wood filler) then sand smooth.
3) Use gloves preferably nitrile gloves during application as natural latex gloves tend to get destroyed by the chemicals easily.
4) Mix the solution very well and apply with a clean cloth or cotton gauze.
5) Dry in 24 hours on a hot day and 1 week during rainy days before use. Reapply to renew.
*This is good for newly built furnitures and this oil finish will enhance the grain with added protection.

*I'm still not sure on how we will be indexing these but guess we will be good as is for now. I'll just update the main list for inputs from each member so we only have to look as the first post for reference.

Re: Finishing Cheat Sheet

Hey bro jarod, this is A VERY EXCELLENT IDEA/PROPOSAL , having a thread sheet dedicated only for this on how to finish or go about finishing a certain project, I like it very much, very very practical and useful. It will be very easy for any member to browse on this thread if in case one needs information how to go about finishing a certain project, may it be in wood, metal, concrete, painting an old rusted roof, applying tiles whether for flooring or sidings , etc etc etc.

This will be GREAT , GREAT information thread, if I need some information procedure on certain project, I'll just go to this thread, and not have to be bothered or hassled by going over all replies on such certain project procedure. :no1:

Re: Finishing Cheat Sheet

eto idagdag mo na ito.

PENETRATING OIL FINISH

this is good for newly built furnitures and this oil finish will enhance the grain with added protection.

to make your stock solution, you need:
1. Clear or satin polyurethane varnish
2. Mineral spirits (paint thinner)
3. boiled linseed oil (kung wala, pede din yung Sadolin deep penetrating oil)

The formula:
1 part of #1, 1 part of #2 and 1/2 part of #3

Mix very well and apply with a clean cloth or cotton gauze. Use gloves preferably nitrile gloves during application as natural latex gloves tend to get destroyed by the chemicals easily. Dry in 24 hours on a hot day and 1 week during rainy days before use. Reapply to renew.

Note: Material should be sanded smooth. You may need to apply pore filler ( I use PYE wood filler) then sand smooth.

Re: Finishing Cheat Sheet

You know what, I was thinking one day ago if someone was interested in finishing other peoples projects for a fee.
Yes, if there is someone here interested in finishing some of my works for me. I can pay a certain amount which can save me the trouble of finishing. who knows that person can even venture into painting other stuff later on and can start a small business at home.... Anyone?

click my signature and it will take you there........
