Hi guys! I'm kinda new to the wood working hobby and I often go to ACE Hardware to source my tools. Sometimes I go to True Value, Hans Tools and some depots like wilcon and home. But I think there are other stores where I can get good quality hand tools at a much lower price and with a wide selection of it.

Right now, I'm looking at the Stanley Plane #4 which costs around 1,800 at ACE. I would also need some good quality chisels, wooden mallet and a good sharpening kit. Also need some velcro sand papers for my random orbital sander. Maybe you can guide me to some stores that I can look at where I can get this cheaper.

By the way, I've been to Panda in araneta where I got my dremel kit. 🙂

Re: Good selection of hand tools

doms you are in the right internet site right now and you have been to the nearest and very accessible stores for your tools shopping. Some tools you found from the stores you mentioned above will all be the same at Robinson's Handyman. You will know if you are already a full-pledged woodworker when you are already frequenting T. Alonzo and Dasmarinas in Binondo.

My advice for you is to plan first the project that you've been wanting to make. As you are building that project you will realize the kind of tools needed to improve skills and quality of your work. In your next project you have already the idea as to what kind of tool is the next to acquire and as a result you will slowly start accumulating tools in your shop and the space for your hobby becomes smaller. Consider this period as your OJT in your hobby until it becomes your passion. How long is the OJT period? Two years is not enough, not a joke. 😀

@Armand

I actually have some tools in mind like the stanley hand plane #4 and a good set of chisels. One of my question is that knowing where I go is a mall store, could I get them much cheaper than in T. Alonzo or in Binondo? Is it worth the travel or should I just buy them in ACE or Handyman?

By the way, I will be building a jewelry boxes. I need the plane for my shooting board and chisel for the joinery. 🙂

For the chisels buy them at malls and try to buy Tramontina brand, they are the best. I have no idea on the prices of Stanley No. 4 all i know is I bought my No. 4 for 1K only in sulit three years ago.

Welcome to boxology. I built several boxes too during my OJT years and because of those boxes i bought sliding miter saw, table saw, air compressor and spray gun for finishing, routers, and built a jointer for planing boards. My chisels? Lotus.

Re: Good selection of hand tools

Oh man! I wish I have the space and the money to get those power tools. I was actually first looking to get these power tools and later realize that I should not yet. I'd like to be good in hand tools first before venturing into these power tools. Though I already have some (drill, circular saw and a random orbital sander), I think its okay for now.

Anyways, you're helping me a lot. I've never seen a tramontina brand in ACE and True value. Do you know where can I get them? Is your stanley brand new when you bought it? Coz 800 difference is huge! its almost half. I'm now thinking on going to binondo or t alonzo this saturday.. I might save some instead of buying in mall.

Re: Good selection of hand tools

Another thing, what router bit can I get that can cut 45 degrees? something that looks like a triangle. Or maybe a good router bit set that has joinery and edging (di ko alam tawag hihi). Again, price range will be very helpful.
