Hello po!

Good evening sa lahat. I badly needed some assistance.

I am planning to make a "Bed/Cabinet". Bali parang table and dating nya, pero ang upper part ng table will have a space para malagyan ng foam. No need for any head and side support. Okay lang plain lang na bed. The main twist po dito is the closet beneath the bed part.

Bali, merong mga clothes cabinet sa baba, parang drawer ang dating nya. Ang gusto ko lang pong mangyari is yung pwede ko siyang i dis-mantle when need be. Kasi I am just renting, so from time to time, I may need to transfer. Ayoko namang sirain yung bed para ma transfer ko. Do you think possible to?

Re: Help me with my Bed/Cabinet plan

Hello too Sam,

So you are thinking of some sort of a bunk bed with very simple design and construction that can house a pullout drawer or drawers underneath. OK, what would be the size of the bed you are planning to make, is it gonna be for a single person or semi queen size ? You will have to plan it well in your mind and on paper plus all the measurements included, the materials you will be using and........the TOOLS you will use if you don't have any yet. Do some pencil pushing so you won't get lost during the construction, better to always have the measurements on paper so you don't make mistakes in cutting your materials.

Yes this project is possible and can be done, it just need a lot of planning. There is a possibility with regards to that drawers you are thinking underneath that bed, you can opt to just buy those stack-able transparent plastic bins for your clothes and other personal effects, purpose of this alternative is to reduce or lessen the hassles when you dismantle your bed in the future. Plus you will have a more simpler and easier construction of your bunk bed.

Let's wait for other woodworkers to chime in but I think you should supply us more with information regarding your plans so we can have a starting point and give more specific answers or suggestions.

Re: Help me with my Bed/Cabinet plan

I really appreciate the response.

I'm sorry for the lack of details. I am really very new to this woodworking stuff, and I am not certain what to include as with regard to measurement. However, here's my ideal plan in mind:

1. Bed size would be around Single size to semi-Queen. We're good with a single size bed (para sweet kami magkatabi ng wife ko haha :D) Pero, mas maluwag sa bed, much better.

Main concern ko is portability eh. I may need to move in to another house, so I can't afford to have the bed to be super heavy. It has to be portable as much as possible.

2. I like the thought of having the plastic shelves. I haven't considered that so far. But, it sounds good to me.

3. I may create a 3D representation on my plan, and I will post it here. So, you can say if it's a doable plan or not.

Thanks for your support.

Re: Help me with my Bed/Cabinet plan

Depends on how dismantle-able you want it.

My first bed when married was a queen-size bed where only the headboard can be dismantled.

If you want to be able to completely knock down the bed to each member you may want to construct it using triangular-brackets screwed on the inside corner of each of the four joints connecting the side panels. It would be good to have 2"x3" center supports running inside, one crosswise and one lengthwise. You may screw these center supports using metal L-brackets. The idea is to put rigidity.

Your mattress can be supported by 3/4"x3" slats running crosswise inside the box. These slats rest on and are screwed onto 2"x4" battens screwed onto the entire length of the sides. You may also glue and screw the battens. I don't see a need to dismantle the battens in the future.

With this construction, you can knockdown into several pieces:
- 4 sides (left, right, head, foot)
- 2 center supports
- slats (as many as needed to fit 4" spacing, side-to-side)

For the slats, you may get fancy and cut them slightly longer so that, when you screw them onto the battens, they will curve upwards at the center. This will counter the natural deflection when you put your mattress.

Here's a rough drawing, not to scale showing the corner brackets and center supports (in orange). I removed the battens to unclutter:

Another one showing the slats (in yellow), again, not showing the battens.

I have not constructed one myself but this is how my knock-down bed is constructed which I bought from a rather upscale shop and has been with us for 9 years now.

If you have a table saw or circular saw, or if you can plan carefully and get pre-cut smooth lumber, this project should be fairly easy. Just a lot of driling, screwing, and finishing.

On the drawers, you may consider the plastic boxes Rosy recommended. I recall seeing at the mall sometime back some boxes meant for under-bed storage.

If you want to construct your own, just make wooden boxes then put casters (wheels) underneath. There is no need to install drawer runners. You will then want to cut notches on one side of the bed for you to fit the drawers into. Just make sure the wood for the drawer face you use is the same in material and grain direction as your bed-sides for a clean look (unless you're painting everything).

Hope this helps.

Re: Help me with my Bed/Cabinet plan

This plan was postponed since I am planning to evaluate the whole plan with the overhead cabinets, bed with closets, etc. Will update this soon as I am done with the designs.
