Re: help with this shoe rack

I too don't subscribe to the piano hinge design, not bec the ts is a newbie doesn't mean she can't handle the work. It would also be beneficial for her to do it the right way too than just sticking with the simple ones which I think stops the person to be ordinary...
The last design Armand hits the nail in the head, the load wouldn't be so much since ladies shoes land naman that it is possible to even use a hardwood dowel for the pivots.
Nice to see you back btw...

Re: help with this shoe rack

Thanks for all your replies really. Now, how exactly should I put the round bar / hardwood dowel on the rack? Sorry guys I can't picture it in my head even with sir armand's quick plan. For the piano hinge I can imagine it done but I'd prefer the roundbar or pivot pin plan. A google image of the round bar application perhaps?

Re: help with this shoe rack

If I were to do it, I would make the cabinets first and the cascass would house them during final assembly. That way I can hide all the dowel holes. Of course this would be a permanent thing once fully assembled and the cabinets would not be removable.

Re: help with this shoe rack

in addition to armand's design, you can roundover the corner below near the pivot to lessen the void.

Re: help with this shoe rack

I use concealed hinges in our closet and ordinary hinges in my son's closet. My uncle's antique pianoo has piano hinges. None of them has any extraordinary gaps

My cargo pants has a button fly instead of a zipper.

Correct becomes a subjective word and the final judge of "correctness" will be the one doing the project.

If the original "shoe drawer" shown in the picture uses a pivot bar, which then would be unique and innovative for the new projectt, a pivot bar or a hinge?

@darrrling nasa yo ang bola nyan kung ano mas natitipuhan mong solusyon. Request ko lang share ka pics pag natapos. 🙂

Just...[COLOR="Red"]DRILL IT!

I guess you are right with the use of the word "correct"....

Anyway, darrrling can choose her path....
I believe the choice of glue would be stikwell. Right? :p
I do recommend you try something complicated than trying to simplify and rush projects, it is what bring ones skill higher...
Btw, you can use the cheapest hinges you chose if it makes you happy. And you can choose button fly on your pants if it makes you proud...

Most of us recommend the best you can afford for things you wish to make good. Its a different thing when it doesn't matter what the outcome is... Regarding our pants? Who cares?
Also, she isn't making a piano.... Which I think the piano hinge was made for?
Innovative? Pivot bar? Unique? Ha? Which is unique or innovative ba? none... These have been in use for centuries.... In case you are not aware... Wala ba kayong furniture, wood work or even metal work na may pivot mechanism? Maybe if you found one you can recommend it too....

Now it makes me wonder why they don't use the piano hinge in car hoods.... Hmmmmmm
Edited: we would btw love to see your woodwork sir, hope you can post some pictures of your work.

Thanks ellieces for posting the links. I got a clear image now on about how to do this tricky part.

In this case she used wooden dowel pins. Now I can imagine how it's done. After applying paint I guess this will barely be noticeable.

Also, I might consider using a pivot hinge. What do you think?

Thanks for the replies guys I totally appreciate it. I'll post this project as soon as I start building. So you can all see the progress. Thanks again 🙂

Re: help with this shoe rack

Good morning mga ka-PHM.

I'm so interested with this project, baka mauna nako sayo @darrrling gawin to (thanks for bring this project up) tapusin ko lang ang silkscreen machine project ko. Sayang coz I don't think matatapos ito in time for Mother's Day and it will be a perfect gift sana for our wives.

Being so interested di ako makatulog on how to simplify the pivot hardware so this morning i went back to the drawing board. Timber's suggestion of using hardwood dowel is ok and easier sana but having 3 binata and 1 dalaga in the house will require heavy duty pivots. So i came up with this plan.

Using full-threaded 1/2 x 1 14 hex bolts and have them milled at machine shop to remove the threads para maging pivot dun sa cabinet side. Then reduce the thickness of the head para di mag protrude inside the drawer (actually this is only optional and not necessary). I guess the machine shops will charge you P50 for each and not bad if compared to the price of a 3/8" round bar. Mas neat tignan ang result nito kesa sa full round bar that runs across inside the drawers.

and here's the application of the milled hex bolt and nut..

these are just my suggestions, lahat ng specs is pwedeng baguhin according to your shoerack plan.

.

just bringing out the DIY attitude in me bugel 🙂

actually yung links ni ellieces are good especially for a single layer per drawer..my plan kasi is 3 layers of shoes per drawer and it means mas heavy yung load and the depth of the cabinet is wider. Wood dowel will work for a single layer and light load.

Re: help with this shoe rack

Armand, while the screw pivot will increase its strength, the installation would greatly weaken the side wall. A hardwood dowel about two inches long and say 3/8" diameter would be very hard to break (and you can even use say1/2" dia.). You can try this by burying say 3/4" of it on a plywood, add a rope and try to pull on it with all your weight. If you weigh more than 50kilos and you could not break it, i believe two dowels (one on each side) will evenly distribute the load even further. A four to five foot drawer filled with combat boots should not even weigh close to that.
I would suggest waxing one side of the pivot of course and gluing one end on the drawer....
But then again, they say if its worth building, it its worth over building.... :p

Build it na.
