recently i was facelifting a room and had to replace the door or more specifically install a new door.
the series of pics below are the wips of installing the hinges.
i ordered a gmelina panel door and stained it with mahogany and after a day i brushed PYE poly (while panel is standing on edge), 2 coats and sanding in between..to make it more glossy i flipped it and supported by two saw horses and flooded it with poly. now happy with its "glossiness" its now my turn to fit it.
i made the jambs but on fitting, i found out that the doort wont fit at all and needed to trim one side using the power planer..so to speak, i made one edge bare again of stain and finish..and this time i thought about installing the hinges before finally finishing it the last time.

Re: hinge installation
i made the hinge installation jig from mdf scraps and glued them.after 30 minutes, they were ready.
using a pattern bit chucked to the gmr1, i routed the hinge plate recess..oh no! i forgot the dust mask! uhu! uhu! uhu!

Re: hinge installation
still needed to pare away the rounded corners with a sharp chisel for the hinges to fit nicely
here dry fitting
now its time to apply stain once again and for the last time.

Re: hinge installation
nice job sir! Pakopya ng jig mo sir ha. Starting to learn and build my own jigs pa lang eh. 🙂
Re: hinge installation
cheap and abundant in the laboratory, i made use of cotton gauze to apply stain and never a brush..with a gauze, you can control the stain.
be sure to shake the can before dipping..dip the tip only..anyway, the stain is almost like water to seep into the porous cotton gauze.
i started with the recess (oooops! i forgot the gloves!)
now hinge installed.fitting nicely and with less time and accuracy using chisels and rubber mallet...
cons here is the finer dust created by the router. but it is quick and you may use the jig again and again (at least for the same hinge dimension)
:p

Re: hinge installation
hey mud!
the masters here already know of this jig and perhaps made one before.
but i thought of posting pics can benefit those who are new to the hobby,
btw..it may not be accurate to cut the jig using the jigsaw (at least for me) but with a steady hand, you can cut the edges perfectly.
mine i cut with the table saw..in three passes..sorry got no pics and i forgot and only thought of posting it later..
the shorter sides are easy to cut but cutting the longer side may pose a problem when using the TS so what i did was to lower the blade and bit by bit elevating it till i cut the entire desired length..hoping you can picture it in your mind.

Re: hinge installation
These self centering drill bit guides will be useful for this type of application. Hope we get a chance to group buy in the future.

Re: hinge installation
i have seen hinge install jigs online before but your Violaine is the simplest and no brainer to use 🙂
Thanks for the wip!
Re: hinge installation
very simple to make and a very useful jig design, what is nice about it is the control for depth unlike cutting them by hand. nice work hope you post more and get to do more... see you soon Doc...

Re: hinge installation
Nice jig! Where did you get the top bearing bit? I couldn't find one the last time I tried.
I have 8 doors and jambs to rout.
Re: hinge installation
i believe it is still available at Hans tools at shangrila.
wala na yata stock sa Panda eh.

Re: hinge installation
hehe they never had stock sa panda. i looked there for years. anyway thanks! i think routing the hinge will yield a better fit and longer door life span. besides, 8 doors x 4 hinges x 2 leaves per hinge = sulit sa effort. especially since i might have to do this again in 6 months.

Re: hinge installation
i only make recess for the doors..i leave the jambs clean...
carpenters in may area when i was a kid made recesses both on the doors and jambs..and it takes longer to finish...and they got more sahod! arawan kasi.
it (pattern bit) is sure worth the investment.
kung wala eh guide bushing na lang hanapin mo and chuck the straight bit.
what router are you using btw? if its makita then you can go straight to Mayon.

Did you try the branch in Binondo? I bought two pieces from them 2 or 3 weeks ago.
Re: hinge installation
Binondo branch? I think I'll go. The job site is in sampaloc anyway, and I have to go to recto to get screws, knobs, etc. It shouldn't be too far away.
I'd get the factory hinge template nga if i can, roi kaagad yan. Having some experience working with karpinteros, I noticed that it's in the small details where labor costs spike:
paet vs router for hinges
paet vs router for lockset
electric screwdriver vs screwdriver (for walls and ceiling alone: 55 screws for each square meter)
Why do you leave the jambs clean? I imagine you can get away with it with nice hardwood jambs, but for lower end wood, don't you need the additional support from the hinge leaf?
