I got some tanguile 1" thk boards for boxes im supposed to make. When i started to cut i noticed the board had developed cupping.

What is a usual remedy for cupping? Planing the boards is my last resort as it will result in a big reduction of thickness as these are just 3/4" thk.

Re: How to remedy cupped boards?

to get maximum yield, cut the pieces to lengthwise and glue back once sides are squared.

Re: How to remedy cupped boards?

What if i leave the convex side under the sun? Will that level it back?

cant answer you that, but no matter what I did with my previous boards, it never straightened. it is the stresses in the wood that makes them warp, imho, you might be able to correct it in a way, but the stresses in the wood will bring it back to warp.

Im so pissed that the boards turned out that way.. its already quartersawn, kiln dried wood. Maybe the recent rains had something to do with it?

Re: How to remedy cupped boards?

they were stored lying down, one on top of the other...do you think if i stickered them it would have made a difference?

Yes, I believe it would. drying the sides faster than the center could produce that.(I think :p)... stickering would make them dry faster and more even imo...

Re: How to remedy cupped boards?

Regarding that suggestion of yours to cut it up into 1" pcs, what method of cutting do you suggest? Im thinking jigsaw..

what is the width of those boards anyway? seems you only need to cut them in half to fix that cupping... or twice if cupping is that bad.

Re: How to remedy cupped boards?

this is what I meant, cutting lengthwise reduces the cupping on each board. squaring the sides before gluing them back to place reduces the waste it will produce and improve the yield.
the pictures are a bit exaggerated though...

Re: How to remedy cupped boards?

With that method, how do i square the edges if the cut piece has still a bit of cup to it?

usually I reference from one side (the dome side) then I handplane it until I am happy... 😉

Re: How to remedy cupped boards?

using your picture, notice the lines I drew left the boards flat... gluing them back with squared sides will leave you a squared board or very close...
I would cut them this way. of course it is so much easier on the ts
