How to Round Wood?

Hi guys

I got a commissioned piece and bit the bullet, i already know of a jig to build that can do this cut but was wondering if anybody has a better idea

The top piece that is rounded is 7 inches long and my band saw clearance is only... 6 inch i think. Also i am not that confident to have it cut in the bandsaw seeing how thick i will have to cut through

another idea was to make a router jig. Similar concept to a router planer jig , but this time the guide reference edges will be well, rounded

Any easier methods?

I also realize that a HUGE round over bit can be used, as those used in raised panel perhaps, if that is the case, what size should i get?

Cheers

Re: How do i do a half round piece without a huge moulder?? pls help

what about table saw?..make a jig or sled for the quarter round only then pass it on the saw blade then repeat the process on the other half..finish the job with planer or spokeshave..medyo matrabaho pa din.

or on a sliding miter saw with depth stop.

Thanks Armand

but i am having a hard time picturing the jig, I would prefer this as this would mean bringing the piece to the tool which i always prefer.

here bee..hope you understand my drawing. make your stock a little longer than 7"

you can use the same jig to remove the square half part of the stock.

Re: How to Round Wood?

or this one, much better no need to flip the stock.

i now have an idea how to make round legs for a table without using a lathe machine.

.

Re: How to Round Wood?

Or laminate the top from two or more pieces? That way you can use the bandsaw. The pieces don't have to be equal either. One can be 6" thick, the other 1".

BTW, assuming that the top is a (circular) arc, interesting math problem you created there, probably unintentionally. Given a chord of a circle (in this case 3.5") and its corresponding sagitta or arc height (1 - 1/4 = 3/4", did I read that right?), calculate the radius or the circle. I get about 2.42", yes?

Re: How to Round Wood?

bee's sketchup says the sagitta (S) is 1" and the L is 1.75, my calculations for the "r" is 2.031"

Re: How to Round Wood?

oh yes guad you were correct: r = 2.417" rounded off to 2.42"

this will be helpful in building an awning.

sorry off topic na po tayo.:)

Re: How to Round Wood?

ok skipping the geometric explanations ( since i barely passed it )

the radius is 2.42"... I did a mock up on paper with a compass. the flat sides did come out as 1/4" with the sagitta at 1" and the base width is 3.5"

almost a perfect replication of dimensions on paper 🙂

i prefer not to laminate. but it does pose an easier process since i can just pattern bit it.
