Re: how to shape/cut wood like this ?

For the curved side, I'd use my bandsaw. I'd start with a big plank, para may mahahawakan, to cut the curved portion. Then I'll use the table saw to cut off to desired thickness. If the height will not fit on the table saw, I'll use the bandsaw again.

Without a bandsaw, tiyagaan sa router with a jig.

What is that for?

HI there jhoana,

Welcome to our forum, can you please post some more pics of the item you are showing at different angles so we can easily see and give you more suggestions on the tools that may be needed to shape that piece of wood. By the way where will it be used ? just curious here. :dog1: 😉

Re: how to shape/cut wood like this ?

Now that you mentioned it's for a book spine, I can imagine the dimensions .

The photo seems to indicate that the ends are of wood, shaped like a D. These can be cut with your jigsaw. But for the length of the spine, I am at a loss how you can curve lawanit.

I have experience in bending wood but not lawanit. Wood is generally bent by applying heat. I either build a steam box or use my heat gun. But, in your case, the curve is longitudinal so it'll take a lot of muscle to bend that. Not to mention the need for a jig (aka a temporary clamping/hold-down mold).

If it's a one-off, you can just get a piece of wood the length of the spine, then plane away.

As Rosy said, post photos so we can give better advice.

Yes Ding, I was suppose to suggest a Jigsaw to shape that thing since she said she was not familiar with the tools you have mentioned but declined since I wanted to see first more pics and perhaps the dimensions. :dunno: I wanted to be sure I am suggesting the proper tool to use. :p

Let's hope other wood workers can chime in as well !!! 😉

Re: how to shape/cut wood like this ?

HI there jhoana,

I think the simplest tool to use to cut and shape these book spines will be , yes a Jig saw, that for cutting; a Belt sander and a Sheet sander, for shaping and sanding that convex shape if you will be using thick lawanit boards.

Hope I am correct on this and hope it helps !!! 😉 😀

If I were to make that I'd use solid wood and shape it using this router bit:

Re: how to shape/cut wood like this ?

Build a pivoting jig so you can radius the "spines" consistently:

A less complicated, but also less consistent jig, is one like Pete
Malinoski's, which has the workpiece stationary, and the router
pivoting on a sled.

These are all intended for guitar fretboard radiusing, but seem
to be applicable to your wooden book spines.

Re: how to shape/cut wood like this ?

This seems to be very practical, making and having a jig to get uniform shapes for multiple book spines.

Actually I was also thinking of a sort of jig but can't figure it out since I am no wood worker and not a router user so Just suggested the simplest possible tool to use manually.

Good post of pic and link bro horge !!! :cool01:

Thanks for sharing. :cheerleader2: :agree:

Re: how to shape/cut wood like this ?

Yep, Horge, that's the jig I was referring to in my first reply.

I recall someone here made a similar jig IIRC for the curved arms of a Morris chair.

Any update jhoana on this project? A router table mounted bit as mentioned above by joey is the best approach for this.

Re: how to shape/cut wood like this ?

Hi, am new here. As a newbie, I can see the jigsaw as an easy solution. rough cut to near arch shape then a belt sander. Maybe you can make a jig using a block of wood to screw or just double-sided tape your work on the flat side so your tools have room to go around the arch while you can have more control and move it around. It's just for starters. You will find better, safer and faster ways to do it as you go along.
