Re: Humidor

Salamat, Willy. I know you'd like it because you also try to put a lot of art in what you do (when the opportunity presents itself)). I can still clearly recall that ornate ceiling you did.

As I sit on my moaning chair looking at the box, I realize it may have been better if the top's radiating grains from the center actually "flowed" down into the sides. I am fighting the urge to do it all over again!

[COLOR="Blue"]Art presents feelings and inspiration. It does not and cannot view imperfection as a mistake. When you are working on your project it is important that you are pleased with the result regardless of what others may think. The only thing we can hope for at the end of a project is the general appreciation of our artistic expression. I don't see anything wrong with this design nor it's execution. I only see beautiful and inspired art. Go on, finish it my friend.:2thumbsup:

Ahhh...maybe next time. Maybe after this I'll make the wife a jewelry box with that pattern. Dangerous lang gumawa ng jewelry box...baka pa-punuin.

[COLOR="blue"]Just make her a small one and emphasize that it's the thought that counts.:foryou::D

Re: Humidor

Followed Willy's advice and routed the edges with a rounding bit on my Bosch palm router.

Pre-finished the box first with epoxy then water-based poly. Used those as some sort of sanding sealer. Then, did routing in three passes, high rotational speed, cutting away small portions at a time to make sure I don't have any blowout. That router base Jay sold me worked great! Took routing with my palm router (also from Jay) to whole new level. Palm router is stable and the see-through base makes material visible. Now, if only there were an LED light at the bottom...

To personalize the box, I connived with my boss' assistant and got his signature with a fat tipped marker. Pasted this signature on a corner of the box top.

Had to blur the signature in the photo for security purposes; but you get the idea.

Proceeded to route the signature with a narrow bit then painted the carved signature’s bottom with some gold paint using a very thin brush. Made a makeshift well around it using sticks and cellophane tape then poured epoxy resin into it.

The idea is, when the epoxy dries, I’ll shave off the excess epoxy, then finish the whole box with water-based gloss polyurethane. The signature will then appear embossed in gold.

Crossing my fingers for now. If this turns out ugly, very little room to re-do.

Re: Humidor

Sorry for being AWOL for some time.

Was actually in Nairobi at that time (just 2 weeks after Westgate). Then had to visit Bohol (we provided water assistance to quake victims). Then had to send help for Yolanda victims, too. Been a whirlwind (literally) few months.

On the project, the signature came out perfect. After sanding, applied some water-based poly. Now building the courage to split it apart to separate the cover and bottom. Can't decide yet if I should use the bandsaw or table saw.

I think I'll go with the band saw but will have to tune it perfectly first.

Will shoot and post some photos soon.
